First of all, might be fair to point out, I'm biased. Long time BNL fan. My personalized license plate is BNL ROX which every member of the band signed (pre-Steve departure, we felt that loss deeply), lost track of how many concerts we've been to.... but ... what a great BNL release! Love, love, love it!! Starts off rocking with the first couple tracks, Get Back Up & Here Before, both of which get me off my butt and dancing and singing along. Then the very melodic Matter of Time is recognizably BNL, mid tempo and very good and then back to up-tempo dancing with Duct Tape Heart which rules, one of my faves. Say What You Want has gotten some air play and is a great classic sounding BNL tune. I have a tendency to love Kevin's songs and upon the first listen of Passcode, I was just overcome (it is a bit unexpected, it's so different), my eyes welled with tears and I just felt....happy. When he sings about being happy to be alive, you know it's true. So grateful for Kevin's health, his talent & this adorable ditty. Changing my ring tone for my hubby to this song asap. Hold My Hand is a solid song I enjoy, but coming up is Narrow Streets, Jim's contribution, and it's awesome, one of my faves. Ed is in lovely voice with Toe to Toe and I really like it a lot. Piece of Cake is fun and catchy with a very singable chorus & great guitar. Globetrot is probably my least favorite song here, it will either grow on me with further listens or be a skipper, for now not really note-worthy. The title track is a solid song, great lyrics, not my fave maybe because I'm not a pinball player, but definitely not a skipper, it will grow on me. Finally, another Kevin contribution to wrap up the record with Tired of Fighting With You.Read more ›

Out-frigging-standing! There are a couple of tracks that could have been left out of this collection without breaking my heart -- but that's quibbling over minor details. This is one rock-solid effort -- love it!

I bought this album before attending a show on the 2015 "Last Summer on Earth" Tour because I saw on setlist.fm that they were going to play several tunes from it at the show. I am so glad that I did. It is an excellent album and, in my opinion, the best BNL release since "Stunt". The tunes are upbeat and catchy. After listening to the album a few times, I found myself humming the songs hours later and realized that various tunes were stuck in my head. That is the hallmark of good music. I read where some reviewers have missed, departed singer, Steven Page. I disagree. I prefer Ed's voice and think that the songwriting has improved since Page left the band. I think Page dominated the songwriting and now it seems that there is a stronger group effort to the writing that shows in the quality of the music. Each member is an excellent musician and this album allows them to all be represented. In closing, the concert was great. They are hilarious and genuinely excellent entertainers. I a classically trained bassist and was blown away by the musicianship of Jim Creegan. He is an incredible player and easily one of the best active bassists of our time.

I must admit this release snuck up on me and I was surprised (and thrilled!) a few weeks ago to see BNL announce a new record. After the somewhat safe and generic Grinning Streak, I was cautiously optimistic that this release would be a return to the more experimental and cerebral side of the Ladies. Silverball contains some better cuts and catchy tunes but ultimately fails to deliver anything beyond the usual pop/rock tunes the band has done before.

One thing this album gets right is involving the other band members to a larger degree than its predecessor. Kevin Hearn's "Tired of Fighting with You" is an excellent and heartfelt closer, while "Passcode" is certainly more energetic and upbeat. Jim Creggan, who has become one of the band's best and most consistent songwriters, delivers one of the record's best tracks with "Narrow Streets". Ed Robertson continues to be the main lead and he turns in some great performances, especially with "Matter of Time", "Here Before" and "Toe to Toe", all of which recall the band's earlier days with smooth melodies and interesting structures. There's also a heavier electronic element at play with tunes like "Duct Tape Heart" and the previously mentioned "Passcode", which works better than you might expect. When the album is good it's GOOD.

What brings the album down a step is the generic nature of many of these tracks. "Get Back Up" is a decent rocker but lyrically and musically it doesn't offer anything new. The same problem plagues tracks like "Say What You Want", "Hold My Hand" and the album's title track.

As I listen to some of the songs for the first time, I am filled with emotion. From Kevin's fight once again with cancer I'm reminded of from two of the songs, to how my heart fluttered the last time I talked with Ed on The Rock Boat, I love this new collection of music from my favorite band. Do yourself a favor. See this band live when they come to your town. You won't be disappointed!
