The lid is the worst part of this butter boat

The lid is the worst part of this butter boat
I bought this butter boat six years ago and I am back on Amazon this evening to buy a new/different butter boat. I like that there is a little reservoir of water to keep the butter cool. The boat holds one stick of butter, which is fine. But the lid ALWAYS tips and falls crooked into the butter dish. The lid gets all gloopy with butter and the edges of the butter dish gets butter all over it as well as a result of readjusting the gloopy lid. It would be a great butter boat if the lid was a bit over sized or big enough that it couldn't get crooked and then fall into the dish. I have been putting up with this lid for six years and I'm over it now.

My husband ordered this as he is fed up with me keeping butter in the fridge. I am fed up with melted butter all over the kitchen benches which is why I kept it in the fridge in the first place.

The boat arrived extremely well packed which ensured it arrived in perfect condition. Still skeptical I washed it and filled the base to the faint blue line, placed a stick of butter in and put the lid on. I then promptly forgot about it. A few days later I made some toast and used it for the first time. The butter was perfect. Firm enough to hold its shape and stay on the knife, but soft enough to spread without any problem.

When in use the set is fairly heavy as there are three pieces of ceramic, a stick of butter and a cup (approx) of water. I was concerned about moving it as I thought the water would splash about. I haven't yet had a problem as the butter dish sits on the base very well. The lid sits comfortably on the dish and sits on an unglazed rim which means it doesn't slide about and provides a tighter seal. I am still uncertain as to how often to change the water but at the moment it seems to be fine doing it when I put a new stick of butter in.

I am so impressed with this butter boat (and my husband likes it too!).

I originally encountered the butter boat at my mom's - she got it from one of the TV shopper networks (naturally). I liked it so much that tried to get one of my own. What an ordeal! As I recall, there was a whole urban legend around the original Butter boat (the lady holding the patent got very sick and they stopped being produced and the patent got tangled up, right when I was trying to buy one, of course...but I digress). I finally found the Silvermark ones on Amazon and bought four of 'em. They've become legend in my family - my youngest daughter just moved away and claimed hers (made a special trip for it!), so my stash of Butter Boats is now gone!

ANYWAY, the Butter Boat performance has been described in other reviews - it really does work as advertised (maybe a bit better). No, the butter doesn't get rancid - unless you are an extremely slow butter consumer (like months or years per stick). I always preferred butter over soft margarine, but spreading refrigerated butter is a pain. No more pain!

Just two issues that I can think of. It's kinda heavy and sometimes a little bit slippery, so it's tricky to pass around the table. (Think about corn-on-the-cob night). Also, the little lift knob on the lid is a bit hard to grip - ours has been dropped several times (without breaking, fortunately!). Now all I have to do is to figure out how to keep the cats out of it at night -- they like the Butter Boat too!

I live in Arizona where it gets so hot in the summer it's not possible to leave butter on the counter because it melts. That means during 6 mos of the year we have to use cold butter out of the refrigerator. Ugh! Then I saw the Silvermark Butter Boat and bought one. I figured I had nothing to lose. Guess what... this thing really works!! I can now leave the butter on the counter and have soft (not melted) butter year round. It's truly amazing! I'm surprised any design could work in a desert environment but the butter boat keeps butter at exactly the right temperature even during the hottest days of the summer. I'm so happy with it I've been buying them as gifts for my family & friends. Concerning recent design complaints, I don't understand the objections about the lid not fitting tight or sealing. The design is fine. It doesn't need to seal. The lid sits loosely on the dish and protects the butter with no issues.

If you like spreadable butter for toast in the morning, this is a must have! Not only does it keep butter spreadable, but it holds more than one stick to boot! I have been on the hunt for quite some time for a dish that met my needs and stumbled upon this one here on Amazon while perusing kitchen goodies. It now has a prominent space on my counter and is used daily. I especially like the fact that the butter is IN the boat vs. on a dish with a bulky lid. Much cleaner, and if the butter does get too soft, it stays in the boat versus leaking out the sides, and making a mess. 5 stars for this one!

I first saw this item on one of those shop for home channels on tv about 5 years ago. I thought the idea of it was great but I never got around to buying one. Well this year I decided that I wanted to buy one but they no longer carried them. I bought something similar called a butter bell. I live in a hot climate and it did not work well, and I had to send it back. I did an internet search for a butter boat and found that amazon carried it. I went ahead and order it. I am soo glad I did. No more torn bread, toast, pancakes, or waffles. My butter is always soft and all I have to do is change the water every other day. Thank you amazon for carrying this product, and I so happy with it!

I bought my 1st Silvermark butter boat on QVC. LOVED IT!!! It is the all white model. Sadly it broke, so I went on the internet and found the Silvermark here at Amazon. Excited but disappointed. The 1st one I ordered had a lid that didn't fit properly. The 2nd one was broken because of being poorly wrapped. The 3rd one made it, but these seem like seconds. Maybe this is why QVC doesn't sell them any longer...poor quality control. If you can get a good one, the butter boat works like a charm...keeps butter from melting in the summer and keeps it fresh!!!

I chose this butter boat after reviewing many similar types, and felt this would be the best choice for me. I like the look of the red and blue stripes on white porcelain, and overall it is well-made. Like other reviewers, I agree that the butter is a little hard to get out if you want "perfect pats" of butter. If you don't care about that, then it does well what it is supposed to do. The butter is spreadable, while the lid protects it from insects and kitchen spatters. I have no idea why water is supposed to go in the bottom section, so we don't use that feature. My main concern is about the ill-fitting lid. It fits okay, but it is a bit loose and not quite a perfect fit. Other than that, I love it! It is attractive and keeps the butter fresh and spreadable!
