Product Description

Color:PT13B  |  Style:Thin-Mini ITX

The Petit PT13 is designed to be one of the smallest computer chassis on the market. Although measuring at only 1.4 liters in size, it easily accommodates a thin Mini-ITX motherboard and a 2.5" HDD/SSD. For ease of installation in an otherwise cramped interior, PT13's aluminum top cover doubles as a flip-up door to allow unrestricted access to motherboard and other components. Complementing this impressively small case are the included vertical stand and VESA mounting bracket to help PT13 fit in just about any environment.

NOTE: See *Update at the bottom for Silverstone SST-NT07-115X Cooler update notes.

This review is rather long, so if you're anxious, jump to the conclusion at the bottom.

Disclaimers:
1. I'm not a gamer!
2. I'm an Electrical Engineer not a professional reviewer, so please take this review as is. I wrote it for those of you who want to pursue building a system like this.
3. I've researched a lot before building THIS system. I'm fully aware of the compromises I've made and I don't care about other options at this point. I wanted to build a system with a desktop class processor in the smallest form factor. If I wanted it to be the quietest or the fastest, it wouldn't have been the smallest.
4. This is the same review for the case as is for the MB. I will post a separate review for the cooler. And with that...

Parts:

MB: Gigabyte GA-H87TN LGA 1150
CPU: Quad Core Intel i5 4570s (65W)
Cooler: Silverstone AR 04
Paste: Arctic Silver AS5-3.5G %
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB DDR3 SO-DIMM 1600 (PC3 12800) (BLS2K8G3N169ES4)
SSD: Plextor PX-128M5M mSATA 128GB SATAIII MLC
Case: Silverstone PT13
PS: Anker for HP Compaq Presario CQ40... [19V 4.74A 90W]
KB: Logitech Mini Controller
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit

Price does not matter as I bought them from all over the place. Look them up.

Installation:

Everything was fun until I got to the cooler. That's right...at the very beginning. The problem starts with the case being not tall enough to accommodate any (very) low profile cooler, so the only option (so far) is Silverstone's very own AR04 cooler. I did try to put a Zalman in it, and it didn't make it. BARELY.

When I first came across Intel's Thin Mini-ITX format, I knew I wanted to use it for an HTPC build for the bedroom. Having built several ITX computers, I've come to love how much power you can pack into a small package these days. Now with Thin ITX, it was possible to go even smaller.

The problem, however, is that there aren't many case options out there that are designed to take advantage of Thin ITX's thinner profile. My research turned up Akasa's Euler and Cypher as viable candidates, but they are rather pricey.

Enter the newly released Silverstone PT13. It's cheaper than either of the Akasa cases, and it's smaller too.

The case is comprised of a nice anondized black aluminum cover and a steel body. It's not as attractive as the Cypher, but it does look quite nice IMO. It comes with stick-on rubber feet, a vertical stand, and VESA mounting hardware should you choose to stick the case on the back of a TV or monitor. All in all, a generous package for a very modest price.

For my system, I went with the ECS Elitegroup Mini ITX DDR3 1600 Intel LGA 1155 Motherboard H61H2-TI. Although this isn't officially listed in the PT13's compatibility list -- and it isn't marketed as a Thin ITX board -- I can assure you that it is and it fits. (I'm not sure why ECS doesn't market it as a Thin ITX mobo, as it is the cheapest Thin ITX board out there and a terrific value.)

Putting the system together, there are a couple of gotchas that you should be aware of beforehand. The first is that the CPU cooler is limited to a height of less than 30mm. This means that the stock coolers that come with Intel retail CPUs will not fit.

An amazing "little" case. I have been building systems since the late 80's and this is the nicest (feel good) build to date.

In short, this is a 1" tall by about 14" wide, 10" deep thin HTPC (even has VESA mount). Think of the dimensions of a thin BD player. Classy looking, no stupid stuff (even the blue led is not silly bright). The board has all you need for a HTPC (USB2, USB3, HDMI, DispPort). With the mSATA You are done with assembly in 15 minutes and you wonder what you forgot! 2 SO-SIMM memory slots, so you are limited to 16GB - about 4 times what you really could use with a HTPC.

My Win8Pro HTPC (this is not for gaming, just for of my TV/Movie viewing on my Panasonic 55" Plasma, and software development work on the 2nd 27" LCD monitor)
This awesome case is designed for this motherboard and its predecessor
Intel Desktop Motherboard LGA1155 DDR3 1600 Thin mini-ITX - BOXDQ77KB (small ITX size, 2 Intel NICs that I team, the one will do vPro)
Intel Cooling Fan/Heatsink CPU Fan BXHTS1155LP (designed for this low-profile build, or you better know a 3rd party low-profile option)
Intel Core i7-3770S Quad-Core Processor 3.1 GHz 8 MB Cache LGA 1155 - BX80637I73770S (is the the "S" version of the chip, can run slower at idle)
Corsair Vengeance 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) SO-DIMM Laptop Memory (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10)
Mushkin Direct Atlas Deluxe 120GB mSATA SATA III Solid State Drive MKNSSDAT120GB-DX (You could get away with 64G on Win8)
Superb Choice 120W Replacement Laptop AC Adapter Charger Power Supply for HP/Compaq EliteBook 8530p EliteBook 8530w EliteBook 8530w Mobile Workstation (many options, I got this one)

* There is a slot for a slim optical drive (ODD) but I don't do spinning media.
