For more details, please continue reading. Having recently re-browsed the Amazon reviews for this product, I saw some people complaining that their drive had failed after x months having ordered it around the same time as me. This prompted me to fully check my drive's health so that I could at least be reassured that it is in full working order for the time being. I ran a read test on Windows using HD Tune Pro since that's where my drive was plugged in at the time, and the results (shown in as screenshots attached to this review) show the drive did in fact contain some bad sectors. I ran a non-destructive write test using badblocks on Linux which, for each sector, will first read the sector and store it in memory, then write a random pattern, then read this pattern back and make sure it matches the pattern that was written, and finally restore the original contents of the sector. I had backups just in case, so I wasn't worried and was mainly doing this for science. At the end, SMART output showed 2310 bad sectors existed on the drive. Since I waited 8 months to run this test and used the drive sparingly, it's unclear whether the sectors were always bad or if they developed over time. It also just so happens that none of the data I had stored on the drive were on these bad sectors. Despite the clear indication of potential failure, all sectors were restored to full working order after being written over. This means the sectors were really just held a weak magnetic charge, and were not permanently bad from e.g. physical damage to the platter. As a result, the pending/offline uncorrectable sector counts were dropped to 0 and the reallocated sector count did not increase at all. If interested, I've included the entire SMART output below. I had the original Silverstone RAVEN enclosure and decided it was time to upgrade to the USB3.0 model only to find that the high end feel of the original RAVEN was thrown out for cheap flimsy plastic. The speeds are good, WAY faster than the old USB2 model, but the ability to swap drives quickly is marred by a tight fit in the drive bay and the need for a tool to get the drive plugged in tight enough to make the connection. I wish they'd just beefed up the internals and kept the old design.

I wanted a USB 3.0 enclosure for an SSD drive, that ran at full speed. I did a lot of searching, and read a lot of reviews, before finding the RAVEN.

The Good:
Drives are super easy to install
Only one cable is required
I get nearly the same throughput as my internal SSD drive, somewhere over 250mb.

The Bad:
Nothing really

The Nit Picky:
Given how slim 2.5" drives are, the enclosure could be a little slimmer. It also feels a little flimsy, which is a plus if you are looking to reduce weight.

All in all I really really like this enclosure and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a high speed USB 3.0 enclosure.

the enclosure does not work...

This device does NOT work. I put in a preformated ssd and when plugged into my pc, the usb chipset appears, but the drive NEVER appears. I took out the ssd and put it into a usb disk docking bay (usb 2) and the drive immediately appeared. I took the enclosure to the nearest Silverstone representative store. They passed it to the distributor. When the replacement appeared. In their store we tested the enclosure and got the exact same failure on their pcs. Using a docking bay, the drive appeared, with the data. So, they are sending the replacement enclosure back to the distributor. We are at 4 months to get to this point...

It's difficult to knock a product that is everything it claims to be; includes everything it needs to include, and performs as well as it should. So 5 stars it is. I've used this with a SATA III SSD drive; as well as a 7200 rpm 3.0 Gb/s conventional drive. Both performed flawlessly without the need for an external power source. USB 3.0 Speeds were simply impressive. I didn't bother to try it in a USB 2.0 port so I can't vouch for it there. If you feel the need for speed, this black bird will fill the need indeed...

Does not work with 256 GB Samsung PM841

Bought this enclosure, and a new Samsung 256 GB PM841SSD. While the drive enclosure works with other 2.5" drives it falls short of being compatible with my SSD. I have tried numerous troubleshooting steps which lead me to this conclusion Plugging the drive directly to the computer it shows up instantly. Perhaps it needs a DC power adapter for it to work with this drive.... Be Ware

Bought this enclosure for future-proofing. Compatibility with SATA III was important, as was full USB 3.0 speed. The enclosure works as expected, and with a mechanical drive in place, speeds are relatively comparable to having an extra internal hard drive.

Power and data in one cable is a plus, though for full speed, a USB 3.0 port and an additional USB port (for additional power) is required.

Great for an SSD

I used this for an SSD. Some people complained about the lack of hardware to secure the drive, I actually love that there are no screws to hold the drive in. It's a snug fit and you don't need screws. You can swap drives in seconds. Had it for over a year now, still works great.

doesnt work with ssd

I tried 3 different computer with USB3.0 and it does not work with SSD. Tried two different onces and the drivers dont install properly but if you use a standard drive it works.
