Dear Similac,

Shame on you. When I had to transition from breastmilk to formula, I researched the best hypoallergenic available. It was a toss up between Enfamil's Nutramigen and your Alimentum. Over and over again, Alimentum was touted as the superior product. It was expensive, but what my child needed. By expensive, I mean very expensive. Blog after blog, message board after message board, moms and dads were writing--begging--for a way to get this formula at a more affordable price. Most insurances do not cover this, even though it is medically necessary for several families. When asked, you encourage families to sign up for coupons and free samples. However, this particular formula (one of your most expensive) seems to be conspicuously absent from any of your discounts or special offers.

So we bought the formula at full price. 16oz for $29.99. $29.99 for, conservatively, five days of food. But families do what families have to do. And we decided to make it work if it would help our daughter feel better.

I just went to Target and Walmart to pick up some more. Surprisingly, the 16oz can was no longer available. It had been replaced with a 12oz can for $25.99. If you can't do the math, I'll do it for you. At $29.99 for a 16oz can, we were paying about $1.87 per oz. Now, we are forced to pay $2.17 per oz due to a "re-packaging" strategy.

You realize that you are preying on families with sick children? You are gouging families with infants that can only use this formula? That you decided to mark up the very thing that families rely on to feed their kids, and not only that, but you provide no way for families to get this cheaper?

Luckily, we are blessed with the ability to pay for this.

We understand you're frustrated and want to help. Alimentum is a specialized hypoallergenic formula which involves a special manufacturing process. Due to recent changes to this process, we had to take a price increase. Please know we are exploring value options to help families and we encourage parents to enroll in our Similac StrongMoms program where they can receive special offers on Similac infant formulas (including Alimentum). If you're not enrolled, we encourage you to do so: http://bit.ly/1DegmXG. In addition to StrongMoms, many pediatricians have coupons or samples, so reach out to your doctor today. Also, if your pediatrician has established a medical need and prescribes Alimentum, you may be able to use a health flexible spending arrangement (health FSAs) or health reimbursement arrangement (HRA). Third party insurance coverage for Alimentum for medically necessary conditions may also be available. The PATHWAY Reimbursement support program provides dedicated insurance reimbursement specialists to help eligible patients determine whether they have insurance coverage for therapeutic nutrition needs. Please contact our Pathway Reimbursement Helpline at 800-558-7677 Monday-Friday from 8:30am-5pm, EST for more details if you want to explore this option.

Your lips and mouth might start to itch, burn, or puff up slightly the moment you touch the stuff, or you might get blisters in the back of your throat. Someone looking at you won't notice this happening, but you'll definitely feel it. The minute the milk hits your stomach, you might get stomach spasms (yes, spasms) and/or searing heartburn, which REALLY HURTS, and unless you're doubled over in pain or spitting up-- which you may or may not be, depending on the day-- you can't really explain it to people, so you start to think maybe its just normal to feel this way. Within 24 hours, you might start to get rough, scaly patches of skin on your face or body. If you're a baby, your butt might turn flaming red. If you're lucky, these will resemble rashes, and someone will say "food allergy." If you're NOT lucky, the doctor will say you have eczema and prescribe something, or your parents will waste money on every brand of diaper and cream on the market, trying to get rid of your red butt... which comes and goes, by the way, so good luck problem solving it. The milk protein may trigger a migraine, with pain and nausea, but you're a baby, and doctors don't even know if you can GET a migraine yet, so you deal with it. Within 1-3 days your eyes and/or sinuses may get red, itchy, inflamed, and mucous-y. The doctor will say you have allergies and prescribe a pill... well, they're half right, but the pills won't help, so you'll just start to think you get sick a lot, or you'll blame it on daycare, or teething. As the milk works its way through you colon, it might trigger an inflammatory response, and you might feel raw/achy, as if you had a "head cold" down there, accompanied by sharp stabbing pains, when two inflamed parts get pushed against each other.Read more ›

I thought it was a label change and I was incorrect. The texture is different, the scope is narrow and taller. The cans aren't as full and my child isn't as full. This is expensive formula, I'm having to purchase double the amount. With the old cans- 1 can would last a week and a half and now it takes 2 cans to last a week.

Please, don't do this Similac. It is torturous enough paying $10/day to feed my baby the only thing he can eat. Now you've jumped that even more. Your product is great and works. Don't gouge those of us who pinch pennies to afford it.

My son (who is 7 months old now) has been on this formula since he was 2 months old..it was a lifesaver for us! He had colic and acid reflux. The first 2 months of his life were hard. He screamed almost constantly and my husband and I were so desperate to help our little guy feel better. Finally, our pediatrician recommended this over the phone. We braved a snowstorm to run to the store and buy this expensive formula. It took a couple of weeks but we did finally notice a difference! We found this product on Amazon and immediately signed up for Amazon prime to have this delivered straight to our door with 2 day shipping. Imagine my surprise when I went to order it today and the price has gone from $53.94 for 6 bottles to $61.20! It is no longer cheaper to purchase here on Amazon. It now equals about $10.20 a bottle and we can get it at our local large chain grocery store for around $9/bottle plus we can use coupons that Similac sends us! Very disappointed..we loved the ease of ordering through Amazon while also saving money. We've also found it cheaper to buy diapers at the store with coupons as well. Sad day for my family when Amazon lets us down!!
