Okay, enough “reacting.” My honest thoughts: I loved this book! This really is a teaching book, teaching you about awakening and mainly showing how simple it is. I got the feeling that the author really wants the reader to “get” awakening, and to get past the typical misunderstandings most people have about the topic. Also, from the book I learned, step by step, a very simple and easy form of meditation that he calls “taking silence.” He says it is one of the best ways to encourage awakening. I’ve tried it and really like it. Of course, only time will tell where it will lead. But the book is very honest in stating there is no way anyone can guarantee certain steps will lead you to an awakening. And it’s that honesty which is one of the many things that made this book so believable to me. I felt like the author was talking right to me, and that he was hoping I’d continue to believe in and pursue this important goal and to not give up on it like so many have. Many “logical” people have dismissed awakening as a fantasy, (I know I did in the past) but this lovely book makes you believe again that it really is possible, even for a normal person living a normal life. You’ll see that the author is just a regular guy who had some amazing experiences that ended up as an all-time transformation for him. He describes how, over a few years, his life was permanently upended in an amazing way. He details how the regular activities of his personal and business life became so drastically improved. So I guess there is hope for me after all!
I appreciated the short chapter on theories of what awakening really is, written in plain English, and how he compared his theories to classic and older descriptions. I read a lot of that stuff decades ago and it never got me anywhere, but this book clarified those older, impersonal theories for me. Now I see what they meant. I also liked the chapter on breaking the myths of awakening, it really demystified the topic. I loved the stories he told about how life changes with awakening and how simple it is.
I left the book believing again that awakening really is possible and that maybe I could achieve it. How many times can you find a book about awakening that is this convincing? I’ve read most of them, and this is the best by far.
Simple Awakening is not exactly a “How To” - there are so many of those, written by people who, like Michael, just “fell” into an awakening experience and then went back and tried to “reverse engineer” the process so they could tell others how to have the same experience. For example, they tell you to “witness your thoughts,” or “question everything in your mind,” or “challenge the ego...” On and on, but that wasn’t what got them through the door!
What if it’s as simple as being interested and available, and, (to switch metaphors), being at the bus stop when the bus comes by? Whatever that means to you. If there is a spiritual practice you are drawn to that opens you up to inner silence, this book will tell you WHY to do it with love and openness, instead of a sense of duty. The great advantage I got from reading this very easy-to-read and intelligent book is that I am MUCH more interested in awakening, and in being available and vulnerable to the call from the Infinite. READ THIS BOOK if your library looks anything like mine!
If you haven’t started meditating yet this book will inspire you to start and if you are already a meditator, this book will inspire you to keep it up. Thank you Mr. Linenberger, for opening up a world once reserved for new age guru followers to the rest of us!
