Cotton Muslin Produce Bags are our most versatile reusable bag. They eliminate the need for plastic bags and are great for both shopping and storage. The fabric allows for good air circulation, ideal for pantry storage. When dampened they provide a moist blanket keeping refrigerated greens nice and crisp and avoiding the slimy mess that can occur in plastic bags. Cotton Muslin is a smooth and delicate fabric that wears well. Easy to care for, just wash them in cold water and line dry (expect about 10% shrinkage on first wash). Our bags are made of UNBLEACHED ORGANIC COTTON. Although higher in cost, it provides huge benefits to the environment and our health by avoiding the highly toxic pesticides, fertilizers and processing chemicals used in regular cotton crops. For larger fruits and vegetables see our Organic Cotton Reusable Mesh Produce Bag.

The information on the website says "Great for all produce - fruits, vegetables, grains and flour. An excellent bag for storing produce in the refrigerator. When stored in a damp bag, greens stay crisp for days." But when the bags arrived, there were no detailed instructions and no information about use. After a bit of confusion because I first emailed the wrong company, I got the following helpful information from a Simple Ecology representative. I hope they can include similar information along with bags in the future.
Here's what the rep said in that email:
Here's how we use the muslin produce bags and why:
We use the bags for shopping (dry) and when we get home we spray off the delicate greens (lettuce, basil, green beans, etc.), put them back into the bag wet, and place them in the refrigerator crisper drawers. The bag will become moist from the drops on the veggies, and this forms a humid tent around them, keeping them from wilting and drying out as fast. Sort of like the spray misters that keep veggies moist at some grocery stores. They stay crisp much longer in the moist bags. Veggies and fruit with thick skins like cucumbers, zucchini, apples don't have this issue so we just store them in the bag dry.
Modern refrigerators have a frost free feature that keeps the air inside very dry (I remember having to defrost the refrigerator :-( ). This quickly wilts delicate greens. Using plastic bags kept the moisture inside the bag so they didn't wilt as fast but also kept the gases inside that accelerates rotting, resulting in the slimy mess you find in a bag that was lost in the back of the drawer for weeks. The muslin bags keep things moist yet allow them to breath, the best of both worlds.
-Having the tare weight printed right on the outside tag is a huge plus, because the cashier can easily deduct the extra weight from your total! A couple of cashiers have given me attitude about not knowing how to do so, but I've learned to embrace the teaching opportunity. In the interest of brevity, I've had the managers of the grocery stores I frequent most often write out directions on a notecard which I had laminated to hand the cashiers if they are unsure how to tare the register.
-I also carry a washable marker in my purse to write the skew number right on the bag when purchasing dry goods in bulk. Washes off in the washer without problem!
As for staining; the Cilantro bunch had a few bad leaves that left brown/black marks but they washed right out with almost no effort at all. This was a great buy and I couldn't be happier.
The unexpected bonus is how well produce keeps in them. I have a bunch of flat leaf parsley that I bought a week ago that still looks perfect --- lettuce stays crisp. Love these bags!
