Some typical examples - custom chairbacks for 'standard banquet chairs' aka those expensive-to-rent Chiavari chairs every venue wants to upgrade you to. Custom-sewed table linens. Welcome gift baskets with wine and a wine book. Choosing a theme for the wedding. (Really? The theme isn't marriage?) And on and on.
The pictures are pretty, but this book isn't about simple at all. It's about expensively bowing to the excesses of the bridal industry. I'm glad I bought it second hand, I'd have been upset if I'd paid more than the very low price I paid.
If you want simple, buy Miss Manners' book on weddings.
The tips in this book focus on making your wedding match the location. This has the effect of limiting your decisions, which is absolutely a good thing. I bought this book after I had selected my wedding location, and I used the advice in this book to help me to narrow down my choices and come up with a clear, executable vision for our reception. The book emphasizes focal points and design, rather than jumping on every wedding trend and accessory there is (which is tempting after you visit one of those wedding expos). She shows you how you can use the "simple, stunning" ethos to save money, and also where it make sense to splurge if you want to do that as well.
