Sad. I'm becoming a cord cutter and really wanted this PDVR to work, but it doesn't and Amazon needs to stop shipping this non-fully functional product, since even with my urging to do so to their CEO via their support team, they keep shipping a known defective product.

Defect 1: The automatic channel scan used to find all availlable OTA channels in your reception area only picks up -31 of the -90 OTA my Samsung TV does using the same antennae! Many other early adopters (the product jyst started shipping) are reporting similar poor channel finding results. Box is useless if it can't pick up the same OTA channels my TV does. Killer defect!

Defect 2: Super noisy fan/hot box: when you turn the box on, a high pitched load fan noise is immediately heard. It sounds like plastic scraping on metal at 10,000 rpm! A firmware update modulated the moise slightly, but mine never turned off and stayed way too noisy to keep. This box was supposed to consume around 16watts or so, so should not need a fan, but as hot as the top of the box is, it feels more like putting your hand on a 40w light bulb

Defect 3: User software on Roku not fully working. I and others on their forum have issues where shows were set up to record, but they didn't record and there is no error file to even figure out why. fF and RR freeze the picture, so all you get is a minute counter, but no screen snapshots to enable you to know when to stop.

Hi Kenneth. We've pushed out two separate power management updates that both reduce noise/fan runtime and enable a device sleep mode to keep power consumption and temperature lower since your initial review! Among other updates, several issues that would cause a show not to record or cause a recording to be unplayable were resolved and automatically made available to users on 2/26. Roku is working much better since our channel update late last week, but we've engaged with the team at Roku to get guidance on resolving other issues! -Patrick/Simple.TV

I really wanted this to work, but it ran hot, and even with the fan running and firmware upgrades after only 6 months of use it has now failed to work at all.

When it did work it failed to register as many channels as my original simple.tv or homerun units which all share the same antenna feed and preamp.

So I'm definitely not impressed with product performance or durability.

Update - 10/13/2014. I continue to be a supporter of Simple TV, (but I do understand that I am, and will continue to become the minority, - probably until they go out of business) I have tried to contact Simple. TV through my account and the website on numerous occasions - But like others I have been unsuccessful.

I have had to make a number of modifications to the simple TV server - Since their last firmware update. I had to basically replace the fan inside the Simple TV box with a much higher capacity fan (available on Amazon BTW) and run it directly from the 12V supply bypassing the fan speed control circuit.I also cut a 2 inch hole above the fan allowing it to vent freely to the outside. I placed several thermocouples on the key components and some were reaching 135F since the firmware mod they put out in March to slow the fan speed, this just caused thermal issues inside the device.

I know I run my Simple TV inside a server closet with other devices, but in my opinion 135F is just too hot and causes the Simple TV server to lock up and lose communication - I don't have a network analyzer at home - So I cant tell if its an issue on the network side of the chip set or the processor - But I suspect its the processor - It just runs too hot. I also replaced the connected hard drive I had (which used the simple TV USB to supply power) with a Western Digital Drive that I had here - The WD drives have their own PSU's - This again reduces the load on the Simple TV box and reduces thermals
(a little)

I have a local time off control capability in the server closet - I now turn both the hard drive and simple TV server off between 12 Am and 4 Am in the morning to allow it to reset and cool.

This unit suffers from many problems.

1) The antenna power is weak, my TV got better reception being plugged in directly (tried multiple locations on both to see if I was going crazy)

2) The software is very basic, I expect this will only get better, but say what you want of the cable companies they have been doing DVRs for a long time and as bad as they are, they are much better than this unit

3) Hard Drive support, be ready to try a couple hard drives, because the first two may not work...

4) The fan, now I was going to replace the fan on my unit if I kept it, but I also have a avionics/computer electrical background so basically the fan is bad.

I purchased the single tuner model about a year ago that included the lifetime subscription and a 1G externam HDD. Setup worked. Channels were set and recordings worked fine. I had to reboot it maybe 1x in the year I used it.

I 'upgraded' to the 2 tuner version about a month ago. Plugged it in and ran through the setup. Moved my HDD from the 1 tuner model to the 2 tuner and it found all the shows I had already recorded. The 2 tuner unit had 1 hiccup where I could not watch something while 2 shows were recording, but that was a one time occurrence and the 2 shows recorded with no issues.

I would give it 5 stars, but the fan is a little loud so put it somewhere out of site/mind/hearing (A/V Closet) and you won't have a problem.

This is my first and only post to Amazon. I tend to be okay with things not being perfect. However, this product is beyond that. I really want someone to benefit from this post.
Avoid this at all cost. Very buggy and requires constant unplugging and replugging. Mine is no longer working. I've contacted customer support and have received a single email each day (from what I read, this is about the level of customer support you will receive)
1st email: unplug then plug it back in - I responded: Okay same thing happened, still doesn't work
next day's email: what is the serial number - I responded with serial number
next day's email: what is your username - I responded with user name
next day's email: unplug it for 15 sec - I responded - Okay same thing happened, still doesn't work
next day's email: what is your router model, ISP, hard drive model - I responded with all requested information
waiting on today's email scavenger hunt

I agree with an earlier post that this product was not fully functional when released. Sometimes, it is better for a company to admit this rather than spend so much energy putting out fires. As for me, I am moving away from the SiliconDust brand.

next day's email: everything seems normal, erase your hard drive and try again - I responded with did that, tried a second drive that i have, and even plugged in a new drive, same thing happens
next day's email: check your router's ip, dns, set it to... - I responded with did that, didn't work.
