Product Description

A scintillating blend of jazzy rhythms, electronic grooves and live instrumentation with awe-inspiring vocals. Soma Sonic's 22 song sophomore release "SIM-PL-CI-TY" featuring the stunning vocal style of French chanteuse Christelle Pechin was recorded over 2 years in France, Switzerland, Canada and the U.S., these truly unique songs bring together the genres of nu- jazz, lounge, chill-out, house, triphop, pop and dub.

About the Artist

Soma Sonic/France & Dom: are producers, writers, soundtrack composers and recording artists Francois and Dominic Paterson. The brothers have been collaborating on music as a team for the past 8 years beginning with their debut album Future, a moody, down-tempo excursion, which was released on their own Subsonic Recordings label in the fall of 1999.

Since then, the music of Soma Sonic has appeared on numerous compilation albums, movie soundtracks, feature films, tv commercials and television shows both domestically and internationally.

In late 2003 Francois and Dominic met Christelle Pechin (singer/lyricist) and began work on the new Soma Sonic album. Based in Geneva, Switzerland but originally from Lyon, France, Christelle is a classically trained singer, pianist, harpist, and arranger. She has performed solo and with various bands and Orchestras throughout Europe.

After 2 years of writing, mixing, arranging, and playing, 26 new Soma Sonic songs were written. Recorded in France, Switzerland, Los Angeles and Toronto "Simplicity" contains 22 songs carefully chosen by France, Dom and Christelle. All music on the album was written, produced, mixed, arranged and masteredby France & Dom, and all lyrics and vocals are by Christelle Pechin.

The music of Soma Sonic continues to appeal to many in the film, television and advertising field. Music from the Subsonic Recordings catalog has been used and continues to be licensed for various uses in both international & domestic feature films, television shows and movie soundtracks.

Simple yet majestic, unusual yet somehow familiar...SIM-PLI-CI-TY marks a new chapter in the Soma Sonic story...

Lovers of smooth Trip Hop are gonna love the latests offering from Soma Sonic. Much brighter and warmer than « Future Shock » (which is an essential for anyone's electronica collection with its industrial shadows and mechanical rhythms), Simplicity is closer to France & Dom's disks - both light and melodious. If you like it smooth and sumptuous with a bit of latino, and you're looking for something new, and you like france&Dom or Thievery Corporation then Simplicity is for you.

First, I would suggest that all readers of this review establish a music channel on the internet site Pandora Radio. I have been a huge fan of trip hop and down tempo music since the first Portishead disk was released. Since that time I have been searching for similarly innovative music. My musical tastes wander from the aforementioned to Morcheeba, Zero 7, Thievery Corporation, Mazzy Star, and the later works of Talk Talk. Creating a channel built around music similar in style to Portishead opened me up to many of the artists listed above. It also lead me to the music of Soma Sonic.

Having previewed such master works as Simplicity, The Well, and Rien I felt more than comfortable making this purchase. What I found completely unexpected was how strong the music was on both discs. I can honestly say that I don't have to skip over one track. If you like seductive female singers, and glorious instrumental "work-outs" then you will love Simplicity by Soma Sonic.

In addition, unlike Portishead where the music can seem a bit "one-note" in its dark, theatrical, constantly trip-hop sound, Simplicity is like a journey that takes you through various styles of music from trip-hop to lounge to cool jazz to dance to Latin, and even to the music of the carousel. You never get tired of listening because the music seems to never repeat itself. Also, I assumed that the remixed tracks would be a simple way to add filler to complete a two disk set, but, to my great surprise, it was nothing like this at all. Each of the original vs. remixed tracks that appear is markedly different from the other, but equally interesting. They are not simply sped up or slowed down like most arists constitute a remix, but a totally different take on the underlying piece of music.

Great beats, a bit more uptempo than Future.

A little too much vocals for my taste.

I bought this album with the thought that it would be like thier first album, and its nothing like it.

So, if your looking for a sound like "Future", do not buy this album.
