But this is so much more than the phone book.

You know how some Christmas songs can get slightly irritatingly repetitive or poppy and you can't handle them in high doses?

This is the antidote to those songs. You can listen to it all day and just fall deeper in love.

You will start planning dinner parties for the holidays just so you can play this music as the perfect background for adult conversation and beverages around the fireplace after dinner.

Okay so you know that feeling when you’re home alone, and you’re just a little bit too cold, like your toes and fingers are a little bit numb, but you don’t notice it until you walk down to the laundry room to go get your clothes out of the dryer, and you open the little door and pull out your towels, and as soon as the cloth touches your skin you are filled with the most indescribable feeling of happiness and satisfaction, as if suddenly you suddenly sink into this perfect alternate reality where you are fully rested with clear skin and no homework? That’s what Leslie Odom Jr.’s voice sounds like.

If you love good jazz, the renditions of the songs on this album are literally gorgeous. They’re literally gorgeous even if you don’t love good jazz. Also, there’s a perfect balance of familiar and unfamiliar Christmas carols, making it both nostalgic and refreshing. Pretty much I’ll be listening to this album until I die. 10/10

Mr. Odom's Simply Xmas cd is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL! His rendition of My Favorite Things" is f_ing terrific, my friends & I always dance & dance with this song. Then right in the middle is that great piano interlude - Damn!. "Have Yourself a Merry Xmas" is so refreshing - tender & sweet then funky! "I'll Be Home For Xmas" is so bluesy, so swing era esp. with that great trumpeter blowing (wonderful). Mr. Odom's "Ava Maria" (never been impressed with this tune) is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful -- I hear with new ears. There are only 8 songs but they are all WONDERFUL! and I WANT MOOOORE :)

Odom's choice of songs ranges from "Ave Maria" and "The First Noel" to the obligatory "The Christmas Song" and The Carpenters' "Merry Christmas, Darling" and he handles them all so effortlessly. His smooth vocals bring images of sitting before a glowing fireplace while the snow gently falls outside the window. I've never actually experienced that, but if I ever did, this is the music I want playing. He begins "I'll Be Home for Christmas" with a smooth, pitch perfect a cappella. The piano comes in, and after an equally soothing trumpet solo, he returns and the beat becomes a bit jazzy. Finally, there's a smidge of R & B before he brings the whole thing home. Perfection.

As I was listening to it the other day in my car, a far cry from the fireplace scene in my head, I felt like the notes were floating into my ear. I thought of the M&M slogan: "They melt in your mouth, not in your hand." Odom's vocals just sort of melt into your ear canal. That's the best way I can describe the listening experience.
