Recently had to learn MySql to design a database with tables to handle millions of records. Spent hours on line and at the MySql forum going in circles. Then asked for tips on reading material, Simply SQL being one of six books recommended by the forum moderators. Although this book is about general pure SQL and not specific to MySql, it is in my opinion the very best book to start with period. Clearly covers in detail all aspects of SQL statements in English and presupposes nothing.
Mr. Limeback's writing style is very easy to understand. It is a bit repetitive, at times, which I found to be refreshing after going over a number of books on the subject which state something only once, maybe in an ambiguous manner, and then start right in on the next level leaving you wondering if you are confused because you are not getting the next concept, or you just didn't get the last concept with no way to extrapolate either case to a conclusion. Not with Simply SQL. All topics are straight forward with examples.
It is not a monster 1000 pager and does not cover everything: no book does. However what is there is fist rate and relatively complete.
Need to learn SQL for MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, etc. from scratch or are struggling to grasp SQL concepts? This book is the easy button to competency. That is just on the topic functionality side of it.
The book itself is a model of information exchange. It is organized logically, does not introduce new syntax with out explaining it, is written at the level of its target audience, beginners with out being remedial or leaving out information (an amazing feat), and of most importance, covers the topic in a manner which Mr. Limeback states makes the most sense, to which I totally agree.
Bottom line: One of the best computer books I've ever read.
I had previous experience with SQL, so some of this was review for me. I found it odd that the author saved the SELECT statement for last, though I can see why he did it. But for someone learning SQL for the first time, I'm not sure that would have been clear. I also felt like there were too many places where the author jumped around or got off topic. There were a couple different example projects that he references, and I feel it would have been better to stick with one and build it out. Oh, and there weren't any exercises at the end of each chapter, in case that's what you're looking for.
Despite these "cons", I would recommend this book to a beginner. It was written in a very understandable way for the non-technical types, but it doesn't baby you too much if you're a more advanced beginner.
I find if very helpful!

On his suggestion I purchased the Kindle version of the book and I am very glad I did.
I am a software engineer and have been for 36 years. I only meet SQL occasionally and like all lazy coders I have never learnt the language, preferring to muddle thru and hit the help forums when I get stuck. I have always known that I should learn it but its like the engineers car or painter and decorators house, it never gets done and after 36 years I guessed it wasn't gonna get done.
I am working on a project that oozes sql (multi tiered, up to 3000 clients) and after reading Rudy's book I have gone back and rewritten every single line of SQL and ..... wait for it ...... it all worked first time.
The plan is to come down off of the ceiling next weekend and coalesce on the floor (eh Rudy)?
Seriously though, this is the book that made me a SQL coder and it can also do it for you, stick it on the kindle and keep with you.
Sorted.
Strong points: it goes straight to the point. It explains the whens and whys of SQL in an easy to follow pace. Covers all SQL syntax you may use in your everyday life. Touches database design.
Most strong point (for me): it gives you the info you need in a way that you can remember it later. You not only understand what the author wants to say, but you actually digest the meaning right away.
Weak points: I could not identify any.
Overall: get this book. It's one of the kind.
It doesn't attempt to cover every possible feature of SQL.
It doesn't try to bamboozle newcomers to SQL with unnecessary features or "show off" the authors knowledge of SQL.
it succeeds in providing a good grounding in how to use SQL.
