It's all about pressure difference.

Verified Purchase

Make sure to first warm up the large (source) bottle by placing it in the the sun for 30 -60 minutes. Place the empty small 1lb bottle in your freezer for about 1 hour. This will increase the pressure in the large bottle and decrease the pressure in the small bottle. Remove the small bottle from the freezer and quickly connect it to the large bottle. Make sure the large bottle is upside down (valve is downward). Open the valve on the large bottle and the small bottle should fill in about 2 minutes. Using this technique I was able to fill my small 1lb bottle about 80-90% full. Be patient and good luck!

First off let me say, watch a few videos on how to use it and use it safely. Those little bottles of propane are getting up to $10 apiece as of this writing. Providing you already have a 39lb tank and this adapter you can refill them for less than $1 a bottle.

I was skeptical that this would work. I had two empty cylinders in the garage and it filled both of them up with no problem. I was thinking there would be an issue when connecting and disconnecting, not one problem. The adapter is made from solid brass, so if you keep it from fouling up, it will last for many years. This will save us money in the long run, we like to camp year round and we use the small cylinders for heating and cooking. Wear gloves when you fill the small cylinders off of the large tank, the transfer process makes it quit cold.

Great for me! Used it without any problems. Easy to connect. Save a lot of money. The little 1lb bottles are getting expensive!! I can fill a 30 lb bottle for 21.00 and then fill my little 1lb bottles myself. I have about 7 1lb bottles I fill. Make sure your big bottle is warm and your little bottles are freezer cold.
Suggest putting little bottles in freezer 1 hour before. No Problem!!

I had to re-order this item , used it once and was only able to transfer 4 ounces of propane .. when I unscrewed it from the tank I noticed the rubber gasket was frayed in two spot.Amazon sent mr another, when I used that one only got maybe one ounce transfer. I give up , just not going to work!

Great product- paid for itself the first day. I followed the recommendation from someone to place the large tank of gas in the sun and the small one liter tanks in the freezer for one hour. When refilling, place the large tank upside down.
I was able to fill the empty small gas tanks with no problem.
