Edited to add: We have now made the brussel sprouts and they were fabulous!
Here a few reasons I love this book:
1. It's pretty. Nothing is more boring than a cookbook without color photographs and this book has a full-page cover photo directly opposite the individual recipe.
2. It's not hoity-toity. You won't have to drive 50 miles out of your way to find some obscure herb in some obscure specialty store in order to make the recipes in this book. Ms. Chandler presents down to earth recipes with down to earth ingredients for real people.
3. As mentioned above, the recipes look downright delicious, and they are! I made the Lentil and Sausage Soup (page 15) last night and it immediately became one of my favorite soup recipes! Hearty and filling--and it will freeze well. And it was perfect as is--no need to play with ingredients or reinvent the wheel.
4. This is a book of true comfort food. It is titled Simply Suppers, but could also be titled Simply Comfort Suppers! From soups to vegetables to pastas and meats, every recipe offers a satisfying meal, side, or dessert.
I guess the highest compliment I can pay to this book is that I look forward to trying most of the recipes. All of us have cookbooks on our shelves in which there a few attractive recipes but not much beyond that. I really intend to work my way through this cookbook because everything looks THAT good! All of us have different tastes so of course there are a few recipes I won't be trying, but only a few! How many cookbooks are on the market that are that appealing?
Buy this book. Whether you are a beginner or an accomplished cook, I really believe you'll find several recipes to love in this little book.
There are some recipes in this book I know I'll never make. That's fine, and true of any cookbook. There are also variations of several things I do actually cook on a regular basis, but I'm excited about trying Ms. Chandler's versions, like her Roast Chicken and Italian Meatloaf.
It's just two of us, and my husband isn't into avant garde, ethnic, or what he calls, "weird stuff." There's none of that in this lovely book. It's just good old comfort food with some extra touches to make it delicious.
