I'm a long time Simpsons fan but they've REALLY toned the show down over the years. No more are we hearing some classic-porn music as Bart and students watch the bunnies' honeymoon. No more are we seeing Bart mooning people while humming an American anthem. No more is there any sacrilege of the church by Homer. No...now it's just another cartoon that's safe for kids.
What? I said it's safe for kids. The TV show I'm talking about. The movie? It's just as tame. There's one questionable part where one character is fully nude, but nothing is shown until the end of this part...where it shows some anatomy briefly.
Therein lies the problem with this movie. It's too tame. "Tame" is not what got Simpsons popular. Simpsons became popular because they pushed the envelope. "King of the Hill" and even that other show with the baby are a lot more risque than this, and that's sad, considering the price you're forced to pay to see this, which was literally YEARS in the making, only to end up, as so many reviewers have so aptly mentioned, a "longer version of a regular episode".
So that's complaint #1. Complaint #2 is the lack of character depth. The other selling point of the Simpsons is the sheer variety of memorable characters. The issue with the movie is that 99% of these characters aren't even explored. The movie centers around Homer, Bart, Flanders and Marge. Burns/Smithers get a 2 minute quick spot; Comic Book Guy says 2 lines and that's it; Bain is renamed to Schwarzenegger, which kills the original joke; Santa's Little Helper shows up inexplicably at the end of the movie; etc etc etc. All of the other characters are just thrown in there for their one little piece of the spotlight and that's it. I don't even remember seeing Apu. Oh, and by the way, three of the funniest characters on the show were not to be seen; Skinner, Krabappel, and Chalmers.
The picture quality of this movie is top notch. It's not just the clean appearance of the animation, even though it's absolutely striking, it's the animation technique. The regular Simpsons used blurry transitions and "film strip" methods to transition between scenes. If you recall the intro with the Simpsons name, and how that's animated, this whole movie is animated the same way; it comes across a lot better than the show.
Buy it? No. Not unless you're a Blu-ray collector like myself.
