I needn't have worried at all. This is classic Julie, with an added dash of supreme wit that is Johnathan McClain. Tyler and Maddie are two very damaged people who are just trying to keep going each and every day. Tyler by losing himself in booze and sex, and Maddie visualizing she's climbing a never-ending mountain. Neither one in a place they thought they would be. But time and circumstances have beaten them down. Throw in some pretty devastating life events, and you're left with two shells of their former selves.
Told in dual point of view, Julie and Johnathan craft such an intensely layered story that I felt like I was a fly on the wall, living and breathing alongside these people. Tyler Morgan, he is probably the most refreshing character I've read about in a long time. This dude lives half his life inside his head! Internal monologue can sometimes be a tricky thing in a book. If it's too long or tedious, it can detract from the story, but let me just say, it totally works in this one! The thoughts that run through Tyler's head at any given time are completely hilarious!
I'm super f%cking witty. Everybody says so.
I agree!! He is super f%cking witty. And interesting. He's more interesting than The Most Interesting Man in the World. By far. But Tyler has a lot of demons he is fighting, ones that have had ahold of him for way too long. The only thing that seems to be a saving grace for him is Maddie. Maddie has been pushing through each day for the past seven years. Nothing seems to work out for her, and she just keeps making one mistake after another with her life. No matter how much she keeps climbing that mountain, she never makes any progress. But when she's with Tyler she finds a peace she hasn't felt in a very long time.
Put these two together, and they are explosive.
We are fire. We are combustion. We are the raging inferno of purifying flame that will singe away all our pain and leave us barren and ready to begin again. In the punishing passion that we share, we can torture away whatever nightmares plague us and both wake born anew.
With three more books to go and just a few hints so far as to what is coming, Maddie and Tyler have a long road ahead of them. The question in my head at this point is, will they be taking that road together or will they continue to struggle through alone? I sure hope not because together, I think they are a force to be reckoned with.
She is a fallen angel and I am sin itself.
I can't wait to see what this angel and this devil have in store for us!
Maddie, whose stage name is Scarlet, is pretty, petite, and smart, but she has a knack for making bad decisions that have staying power. What is she doing with that degree from LVNU? She is doing nothing lucrative and nothing prestigious. Personal tragedy in her past haunts her daily. She has surrounded herself with people who are equally stuck in a downward spiral of bad choices and despair. Her situation seems hopeless, and I found myself feeling oppressed with her burdens as well as desperately wanting to help her.
Tyler, a veteran with a lucrative patent, has it made financially; however, his multiple tours of duty have left him physically and emotionally scarred. His reality sometimes seems like a bad acid trip. Between the copious amounts of alcohol he consumes and his mood-altering prescriptions, Tyler is clearly losing the battle with his demons. “Will the angel of his dreams drag him to the depths of Hell?” is the million-dollar question.
Ms. Huss and Mr. McClain cleverly present their characters. In alternating chapters, Maddie and Tyler give readers their backstory and share the skeletons in their closets. The female-male writing team adds a sense of veracity to the voices of their female and male characters. Maddie is intelligent and hopeful and yet filled with despair. Tyler is humorous in his meandering musings, and he feels doomed and hopeless in his survivor’s guilt. While it felt like I could pick out which author wrote which character, the writing fits like two perfectly matched puzzle pieces.
True to style, Huss’ story is more than it seems. Sin With Me is a lot of character development and story set up. Readers get a punch to the gut reveal and a tantalizing segue to the next book in the series, Angels Fall (due March 27th). The plot has a great pace and a good balance of suspense and hotness. Some of the scenes are surreal (in the Hunter S. Thompson sort of alternative reality way). All in all, Sin With Me is not only an excellent debut as a new writing team, but a fantastic story with a great hook. I for one, am anxiously awaiting the next installment of Maddie and Tyler’s tale.

The way that Tyler is written had me in hysterics despite the somewhat desperate need behind his actions. The constant talking to himself inside his head is genius because, lets face it, most of us go off on internal monologues and completely lose track of where we are and what we are doing. Reading about what was going on inside Tyler's mind is also a little scary!
Maddie had to grow on me. It took me a while to understand why she was putting herself through what she was when realistically there was no need. But as the story progressed her reasons became clear and I was really starting to feel her despair and outrage with life and the injustice of it all. The loneliness and hopelessness.
I loved the duel POV. All too often romance novels are only written from the female perspective. Men have feelings and emotions too and I love when a writer captures the thoughts and reasons behind the actions of the lead male character.
For anyone who has read Julie's previous work there is a little homage to a certain character we all know and love,. To anyone who hasn't....what's the matter with you?!
Angels Fall will continue the story of Maddie and Tyler in the Original Sin series.
The story is funny, heart wrenching and has you on the edge of your seat with the twists and turns. The unique thing about this book is the fact that the male part is written by Johnathan and the female part by Julie. You can really feel the different voices and personalities coming through.
The characters have a very turbulent start to their relationship that quickly becomes deeply entwined. There is a pretty dark back story that slowly comes out throughout the book and leaves you literally gasping at the end (for more reasons than you might imagine). I feel there is a lot more to come.
What a giggle they must have had writing this book....... especially the naughty bits. I imagine every time they passed scripts between each other they fell apart laughing (well I would have done)
Julie doesn’t usually do cliff hangers, so this was a surprise and a delight. The next three books come out pretty quickly, so there is not long to wait.
Sin With Me introduces us to Tyler and Maddie. Both have tragic back stories that are intertwined. I loved Tyler’s wit and sarcasm and aloofness to some things and the humor he brought to the story. I loved Maddie even though she seems to have given up on things and just goes with the flow to survive. She shows signs of determination and at some stages in the book, you might want to scream at her!
Told in a dual POV, you see the dark and light sides of the characters and of Vegas. The story is intense, wild and bold. And the ending just leaves you begging for the next! I cannot wait for the next installment of this series. Bring it on J&J!
I don't mind admitting that when I first heard JA Huss was working on a 4 part series with a virtual stranger, I was sceptical. Julie's work is very singular and doesn't lend itself readily to a new voice. I needn't have bothered to worry. There is a freshness about the story. There's an otherworldly quality that I am finding fascinating to read. I can only conclude this is Johnathan's influence and writing style.
It's pointless trying to describe the story, I'm rubbish at it 😏. Instead I can wholeheartedly recommend Sin With Me to all who want a mental workout as we meander towards what I desperately hope is a satisfactory conclusion 3 books from now.
So when a new release is set to come, I am itching to read it and knowing this was a 4 part, I was tempted to wait until all 4 were released because yes I love cliffhangers but I also hate having to wait! Anyway, I couldn't wait! And omw, I'm once again in awe!
Now back to the actual story of Tyler & Maddie...it was freaking awesome 😁
Tyler is a dude I wanna hang out with! Dry humour, wit and oozing cool sex appeal...what more could you ask for?! Maddie is an open book with a hidden story that instantly intrigues you!
As for the actual storyline....read the blurb and go in blind, you won't be disappointed, there's attraction, passion, steaminess, humour, dry wit (love dry wit!) friendship and so much going on below the surface that you can't help but keep reading - 3am in the morning is upon you before you even realise!!
