Kind of Light for Zombie books - YA?

I gave this 4 stars because I liked the angle the author took. Liam is a 15 year old kid who basically drags his 104 YO grandma through the apocalypse. I didn't think there were a lot of twists and turns other then how to keep grandma alive. For a zombie book there is almost no cursing or violence. There is some action and tension but to be honest, this book would fit into any 7th grade library. There lots of religious talk but I assume this is legit when people start to face death. But I thought the author told a tight little story with decent editing, punctuation and grammar. I have gotten really sick of reading X-Seal team soldiers running through urban apocalypse landscapes so this was a breath of fresh air. Now for my regular RANT: I almost gave this book 5 stars because he finally acknowledged what 90% of these types of books conveniently ignore - the heroic police, the heroic military and even the heroic train engineer... They are all the government!!! The bad guys were Nazis in the 50s. In the 60's the bad guys were Soviets. In the 80's the bad guys were corporations. In the 2000s the bad guys were super rich tech founders. It appears that now the our Government is trying to kill. At least the author is questioning this and for the first since I have been reading these books is considering that this thinking is probably just conspiracy B.S. I really appreciate this insight. The government is who creates police forces, arms and trains the military, builds all those roads that people run down. I realize there always needs to be someone to blame (nature would never create anything to hurt humans since we have been so careful to take care our nest LOL.). Folks, we are the government weather you like what you or not. Its not some vast conspiracy. Its just a bunch uninformed people voting for people they couldn't stand to be around for more then a few minutes. I hope my next read is about Nazis unleashing a plague.

Great breath of characters!

Zombie books have been done to death (pardon the pun). So when I am in the mood for one I really focus on what makes a story different from the others. Some are very overt such as Empire of the Undead which is set in the Roman Empire and has a difficult to manufacture cure to actually bring someone back from being a zombie. There is also a less subtle approach such as the Zap heads universe were the “Zaps” actually had their brains fried by a solar event but with the exception of biting to spread the infection pretty much behaved like traditional zombies. Another historical approach Scourge of Byzantium uses an approach where a famous person is turned into a zombie changing our world way back in the 7th Century. Joining this unique club in my mind is Since the Sirens. The zombies themselves seem pretty standard. What really stands out is the breath of the author. He wrote the main character who was a 15 year old boy just like I would think of a fifteen year old boy, obsessed with technology and focused on friends. Thanks to my own lucky experience of having a Great Grandmother live until she was 105 I have a really good idea how they would act. The other main character is the boy’s 104 year old great grandmother. A challenging set of main characters to write together if there ever was one. I’d have to say the author nailed how a 104 great grandmother would act. Even using some of the exact sayings she would use in place of cursing. Very well done! Surprisingly there was a nice treat that I believe may set this book apart from other zombie stories if this unique relationship between two main characters doesn’t continue on much past the first book.

Liam is spending the summer with his great- grandma, not by choice, but he is making the best of a bad situation. When the Zombie outbreak happens, he debates with himself what he must do. Does he try to take this 104 yr old lady out of the city or bunker down. In the end he has no choice, and along with a new friend, Victoria, the 3 set out to leave the city to the dead.

This turned out to be a little different than I expected. I'm still not sure what my feelings are on where the author is taking the story. Grandma's visions were very much out there and I'm a little unsure on whether I like that turn of events or not!! I might have to read book 2 to really see what I think.

Anyway, the overall plot was ok. The Zombie apocalypse happens and catches everyone by surprise and Liam and his grandma have to find a safe haven. Nothing really new there but still enjoyable to read. It wasn't exactly a fast paced, intense read but it played out fairly well. I wasn't bored, which is always good and it held my attention till the end!!

Character wise, I liked Liam and thought he was believable. He is a typical teen!! When the Zombie outbreak happens, it takes him a while to believe it and then his first thoughts are for himself till he finally remembers his great grandma. Even then, while he would never leave her behind, he does plan a "what if" situation and a "could I" situation. "What if" the zombies attack, grandma cant run, "could I" leave her? etc. I think most teenagers would think the same.

In all, this was a good story with likable characters. It's not a gory, action packed zombie read, but enjoyable non the less. It's very much a YA Zombie read!!

YA horror fiction isn't a genre I usually choose to read, but Since The Sirens caught my attention with its 104 year old great-grandmother, Marty, as one of the lead characters. Together with her 15 year old great-grandson, Liam, she must try to escape zombie apocalypsed St Louis city. Isherwood does a good job of presenting the realities of such an ordeal and I would have liked more scenes of the reality from Marty's unique point of view as we get at the beginning of the book. Unfortunately she is then mostly relegated to hallucinating about a weirdly-spoken angel while attention focuses on the agonies of indecision and self-doubt experienced by Liam.

Since The Sirens isn't a particularly long book, but is slowly paced without much in the way of variation in speed. I often found myself willing Liam especially to just Get On With It! Isherwood has obviously spent time researching his St Louis settings, but I thought too much of this information was divulged in scenes that should have been snappier to maintain my excitement. Otherwise Since The Sirens has a good story arc and, despite being the first of a series, I was delighted to encounter A Proper Ending! There is plenty of scope for the futher novels - five at the time of writing - but, as a reader, I appreciated not being abandoned mid cliffhanger.

A pleasant well written book. However, if you are expecting a full on zombie adrenaline rush, this is not the book for you. Not the normal writing style that you would expect from this genre and there is a lack of suspense. Also as each episode proceeds I found it got a little boring. That said it was still a nice read with few grammatical errors (unlike a lot of books on here).
