Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Advertising, religion, sex and politics are just a handful of the topics touched on by Tatsuya Ishida's popular Web comic, Sinfest. This first volume collects the first 600 outings of the nearly 10-year-old strip. The cute, slightly raunchy cast of characters includes Slick, the womanizer, Monique, who may or may not be a tramp, the Devil, God and a slew of other demons, angels, animals and humans. While clearly influenced by comic strips such as Peanuts and using takeoffs on some of that strip's familiar setups, Ishida takes his work into dark, politically incorrect directions. The art is likewise a mix of comic strip cute and manga that's accessible to a broad range of readers. Bonuses in this volume include a sampling of Sinfest the College Years, proving that the comic was once raunchier and harsher than its current incarnation. Harsh as it is, Sinfest offers many laughs; it may be brutally funny, but it is dead honest and refreshing. And underneath the shock value of some of its gags is a comic strip very much in the classic newspaper tradition. (June)

If you do not currently own any of the Sinfest compilations - "Sinfest", ISBN-10 0-9724663-0-4; "Life Is My Bitch", ISBN-10 0-9724663-1-2; and "Dance of the Gods", ISBN-10 0-9724663-2-0 - then I recommend this collection very highly. It's a well-drawn and innovative comic strip, and worthy of publication. If you *do* own these, I recommend you save your money - "Sinfest Vol 1", ISBN-13 978-59582-319-9 is a reprint of "Sinfest" and half of "Life Is My Bitch", adding only an Introduction by Dirk Deppey and a handful of strips from when Sinfest appeared in the UCLA student paper. Almost certainly, "Sinfest Vol 2" will be a similar reprint of the second half of "Life Is My Bitch", plus all the strips in "Dance of the Gods".

I enjoyed this so much more than I thought I might! It's a great strip comic in the tradition of Bloom County and Doonesbury...not so much Doonesbury's politics and with fewer beloved characters than Bloom County, but you'll love these folks just as well. There's sex, religion and slam poetry...do you need any more? And God holds sock puppet performances....COME ON...plus if you like the cutesy animals of Liberty Meadows, Sinfest has the best (and most realistic)cat and dog team up since Disney...Get it, sit back and enjoy!

As one who has read the entire Sinfest series to date a couple of times on line, I thought it appropriate to purchase a hard copy of the early days, just in case it fell off of the web. This volume also includes some of the early pre-sinfest works as an historical perspspective of his work.

Very enjoyable for the most part.

I LOVE the latest Sinfest but liked this early stuff years ago. I bought it mostly for the 'complete set' feel along with 'see how the comic has changed' historical feels.

Still a great world with some good laughs though.

This Book gives you the comics from the beginning of Sinfest. It gives a feel of nostalgic when reading it. The book includes the original stips that were not online from when the author first wrote them in college. Sinfest Volume 1 is a great gift for anyone who has just discovered the webcomic.
