I see this read is still a freebie and if you've never read Samantha Holt let this be your first book. You have nothing to lose but your heart. Julian Cynfell, Marquess of Lockwood, has been married three times and all three wives have died. It is rumored that he is the cause and so he avoids going into public. It is through letters to a woman in New York (a business associate's daughter) that he forms a relationship. What he does not see coming is her sudden appearance on his doorstep not only shocks him but his disheveled appearance is sure to make her flee.

Viola Thompson comes under the impression she was invited and is soon to receive a marriage purposal. She leaves behind her in America a sick father, disappointed brothers and a hopeless past. She has had her share of disappointment but after the wonderful words that spilled out in every letter written by Julian her future looks bright. The whole story is endearing from start to finish. Julian is not written as some horny rogue but as a gentleman and I for one thought it a breath of fresh air. I do not mean to say that there are not love scenes or that Julian kept his clothes on during. He turned up the heat but does not do it with charming words or seductive moves.

In fact while Julian is talented with a pen and paper he struggles expressing the same silky charm with his mouth. That to me was charming. He is not practiced or frivolous but a man who has real flaws and I enjoyed the two discover what they could build together. The book is short but SH once again delivers a convincing romance between two that are both staring down a dark future apart. Enjoy!!

Viola Thompson was an American, her father was a hard working man, and recently all his hard work paid off, and they became wealthy. They were so wealthy in fact, that a Marquis from England, Julian Cynfell, the Marquis of Lockwood wanted to invest in his business. She and the Marquis had been corresponding for six months, talking about his investment with her father's business, and also other things, such as music, and the sights to see in England. Her father would have took care of all this, but he was sick with pneumonia, and wasn't able to do the paperwork. During their correspondence, she got the impression that he wanted to marry her, he did invite her to see the England one day, so she thought it would be as his wife. As her father was getting better, and wasn't so dependent on her anymore, and she did have four brother's that could help him, if he needed them, she wrote Jillian that she would be going to England. She wanted to see him, and speak to him about something that wasn't appropriate to put in a letter, she had a secret that would only share with him, if indeed when upon telling him, he did still want to marry her.
Julian Cynfell, Marquis of Lockwood, felt he was cursed, having been married three times, and all three wives met with tragic and fatal deaths, he thought he was better off not being married anymore. After all he did have six brothers, and he really didn't mind if he died without an heir to call his own. It wasn't only he that thought he was cursed, but he heard talk whenever he did venture outside his self imposed prison, within the confines of his home, he heard what people were saying and couldn't help but believe he was cursed. He closed off his heart, ad wanted nothing more to do with women.

This is the first book in Ms. Holt's new series, the Cynfell Brothers. Julian, the hero, has six younger brothers, so presumably they will each get their own story at some future date. FYI, we do not meet any of Julian's brothers in this book, but we are treated to a glimpse of his mother who, by all appearances, is very much the overbearing mama. What touched me the most about this story is how awesome a job Ms. Holt does of humanizing Julian's character. He is powerful, wealthy, titled, and extremely handsome, yet for all that he's insecure in himself. After losing three wives, Julian has isolated himself from the rest of the world convinced that he is cursed and that any woman he marries is destined to die. When Violet shows up on his doorstep, Julian is at first taken aback, and then enchanted. Violet is unlike any woman Julian has ever known; she's fiercely independent, outspoken, and doesn't give a fig for his social status. I loved the two together. Violet has had her share of difficulties in the past and was hoping for a fresh start in England with Julian. I got a little teary eyed when she realized that Julian has no intention of marrying her. Fortunately, the story is a fairly short one, so any heartache or misunderstanding didn't last too long. Ms. Holt has once again produced a winner! BTW this is not a clean romance. There is a love scene included that is fairly graphic; although, IMO, it is not overly so. Furthermore, no crude language is used. Happy reading!

#1 in a new series about the "Cynfell Brothers" and their sinful confessions. #1 in a new series about the "Cynfell Brothers" and their sinful confessions. Seven brothers and seven sins. This is the sin of wrath...

A quick read filled with guilt, passion, and romance. A heart filled with guilt will not let love enter but will love be denied. Another hit for Ms. Holt! Well written with engaging, and flawed characters and a truly unique storyline. Fans of novellas, Historical Romance and a satisfying, enjoyable read are sure to enjoy the Cynfell Brothers and the ladies who capture their hearts. An enjoyable and satisfying read. I read it in one setting and have to say I truly enjoyed how these two flawed characters learn to take another chance with each other and on love. Well done, Ms. Holt!! Will be waiting impatiently for the next installment! Recommend to anyone who enjoys reading unique storylines with flawed, sinful characters.
