This was a good story. I liked Morgan and Race alright...the story was fine but there were things I had issues with. This is the first story I've read by this author and there's something about the writing that just wasn't for me. I might try another of her books in the future but that's unsure because I'm not sure I'm into her writing style.
Race is a female executive at a big firm. She's had to be a witch to get where she is at work and keep her position. Race lost her father when she was still young and her mother wasn't very supportive growing up. Race had a boyfriend in college that cheated on her and it made her swear off any love interests.
Morgan is fresh out of 8 years in the Army, specializing in surveillance and supervision. When he gets home, it's to a smothering mother and old friends that are no good and will just get him in trouble. Morgan goes to a family wedding in Florida and ends up getting a position with his cousin's PI firm.
Morgan moves to Florida and his first case is a blackmail case. The client is a business woman that's being blackmailed and her career (which she's worked hard to get ahead in) is threatened. Race called ALFA's PI to work on her case and hopefully find out who's threatening her. When Morgan and Race meet, she tries to put on a cold front like she uses so much at work but she's flustered by Morgan. The attraction is definitely mutual but Morgan isn't happy he feels such a strong attraction to his first client. He's a bit worried for his job but after he can't keep Race off his mind for days at a time, Morgan decides to explore more with her.
As he and Race get to know each other, Morgan works on her case but it's not made easy by Race's disinterest in sharing her personal details with him. Despite her attempts to be standoffish, Race can't help but be drawn in by Morgan and be too flustered to hold onto her attitude. Morgan is a rather take charge guy and tends to ignore/enjoy her attitude so it works out well. The case doesn't go quite as well. They figure it out and all but there are delays that cause some danger to Race that really could have been avoided. But with that hurdle taken care of, Race and Morgan are able to (with a little help) start their HEA together.
This was an enjoyable story overall. Race was a decent heroine but she did sometimes seem to be obstinate just for the sake of it, even if it was to her own detriment. Morgan was a good hero. I'm not sure what it was about the writing that I didn't quite get into but although I thought the characters and story were alright it just wasn't quite the right vibe/feel for me. I guess this author's writing style just isn't for me but others might like it better.
* note - I listened to the audio version of this book. There were 2 narrators, a female for the parts from Race's PoV and a male for the parts from Morgan's PoV. Both did fine but Race's narration did bother me a bit. Race was born and raised in the city in Florida and from what I've heard (and experienced), the people that live in cities in Florida don't typically have the southern accent. The female narrator portrayed Race's voice with a heavy southern accent (that to me sounded more Louisiana than Georgia/Florida) and the male narrator didn't give Race an accent...so it bothered me a bit.
Morgan feels at piece in Florida with his extended family. Thomas Gallo offers him a job at ALPA PI. He accepts the job and moves to Florida. His first assignment is to find out who is threatening Race True.
Race True is alone in the world, she's strong, a hard worker who is up for a promotion. She doesn't trust anyone, and is being threatened by an unknown stalker so hires ALPA PI to find out who is threatening her. Race reveal all of the details only to the investigator assigned to her case.
Sparks fly between Morgan and Race. They fight it, but their connection is strong and they need each other for more than just the case.
Chelle will keep you in suspense as Morgan, Race, and the Gallo's work together to protect Race. You become engrossed in the interaction between Morgan and Race, and cheer for their HEA.
Men of Inked fans will fall in love with Chelle Bliss's new crop of hot alpha men in the ALFA series. There will be cameo appearances from our favorite Gallos, including Izzy, but they are not the focus of the series. Never fear! Bliss doesn't let her fans down. Although the Gallos are in the background, you will not be disappointed with who takes the forefront. In Sinful Intent we meet Morgan DeLuca, favorite cousin to the Gallo clan. Morgan is a former troubled youth who was given a choice: military or jail. Opting for door #1, Morgan turned his life around to become a responsible adult and dedicated soldier. The story opens with Morgan and his mother Fran enroute to Izzy and James's wedding. The entire trip, Fran is reading Morgan the riot act about...well...everything. She is a sweetheart and you'll love her to pieces but she definitely stays on her boys back (which actually works out for Morgan toward the end of the story). The wedding reception lends itself to a good deal of family ribbing and fun times, but it leaves Morgan with a job offer from Thomas to join them at ALFA Investigations -- the PI business started by him and James. Morgan deliberated his decision for only a little while before deciding to accept the offer. Confident in Morgan's skills, Thomas assigns him a case right away. The client is Race True (you'll adore the meaning of her name) and she has a bit of a problem. Someone, an anonymous someone, is threatening to go very public with something very personal to her. She hires ALFA to see if they can help to unmask her blackmailer.
Morgan and True have potent chemistry between them at their first meeting. Morgan is very attracted to Race, and she is as equally attracted to him; however, her professional ice princess mien reveals nothing to the effect. But that doesn't last long. Morgan and Race quickly yield to their passion for one another and through that passion their feelings for one another grow exponentially.
As with any good story though, it's never that easy. Love doesn't conquer all without a few battle scars. Morgan is desperate to reveal who is blackmailing Race but the blackmailer plays some serious games with them that almost costs Race her life.
The story is thrilling from beginning to end and I love the byplay and interactions between the characters. Bliss creates characters with strong voices that are similar yet so very different, too from her typical characters that we know and love. Sinful Intent definitely needs to be on your auto-buy list this summer!
At the end of Sinful Intent we are introduced to Frisco, a new PI and a transplant from San Francisco. I cannot wait to get grabby hands on his story.
