After ordering a replacement vinyl disc set - and lamenting the inevitable surface dust and scratches that accumulate on a 50-year-old record, I discovered that Amazon has it on digital download! Wow! It's perfectly digitized without a single click or dust particle to muddle the sound. On my first listen to the 256kbps download (very high-quality mp3) I heard parts and elements of the music I had never before known. I'm also convinced that the stereo separation in that mp3 download is superior to anything possible with an old vinyl pressing.
Doing a quick search for "Harry Simeone" under mp3 downloads shows you can get the medleys from this album as individual downloads or as a complete album - just be aware that the cover graphic is not the one I knew growing up - but the songs sounded the same (or better).
So, my suggestion is do the "mp3 download" search for "Harry Simeone" and listen to the track demos - and download the album or whatever tracks you like. Sure, for those who prefer the old vinyl discs you can always get those as well for nostalgic reasons - but I think you'll prefer actually listening to the digital downloads.
Merry Christmas to All and to All A Good Night!
UPDATE December 2014 - it turns out I was listening with rose-colored glasses (how's that for a mixed metaphor). My digital download was NOT exactly the same as the original vinyl release - but to my waxing-nostalgic (earwax, no doubt) ears, it seemed like the good old days. See the comment thread for this post to learn the differences.
This particular CD release on "20th Century Fox" sounds to me to be the same quality as the Casablanca CD, which is available here on amazon for about $10 less.
I also suspect this CD is unauthorized, or a bootleg. It is marked "made in Germany", has no bar code, and if you look at the insert of the cover art, this looks like it was run off on a color copier rather than more professional equipment.
I just don't understand why a Christmas album of this importance and magnitude has not been restored and remastered with decent cover art and improved stereo sound for all of us who grew up listening to this recording year after year for decades. The music and performances are wonderful. I still listen to it six decades later but have never seen even the Casablanca CD in any store.
I'd recommend buying the "Little Drummer Boy" CD on Casablanca here on amazon first, unless you have a strong feeling about wanting the "Sing We Now of Christmas" cover picture on your shelf. Enjoy!
I've got to say, I'm so happy I bought this one! It's my all-time favorite Christmas album of my childhood. I've memorized every note of every song on the original album, so it was a rare pleasure to hear it again after 40 years. Even though the songs are exactly the same, the sound quality of this CD is so much better than my original record. And with no scratches! :)
To whomever put this album on CD, thank you for allowing me to share this truly great Christmas album with my kids. You just don't hear songs like "Go Tell it on the Mountain" or "The Little Drummer Boy" performed like this any more. These songs still give me shivers!
I highly recommend you add this CD to your Christmas music collection.
