About the Author

An adoption advocate and Papa to nine children three biological and six adopted John M. Simmons chronicles his family s journey of love, laughter and discovery of what it means to be a family through international adoption. His award-winning novel The Marvelous Journey Home and his memoir, To Sing Frogs, detail the Simmons family s quest to adopt six children rescued from an impoverished rural Russian orphanage and raise them in a serene mountain valley near Park City, Utah.

Through his first-hand account and insight into the challenges and life-affirming rewards of international adoption, Simmons hopes to inspire others to open their hearts and their homes to children around the world in need of a family.

The Marvelous Journey Home earned Book of the Month status from Audio Book News Service and BookReview.com and made the Top Ten Reads Lists for MyShelf.com. The novel earned Best of State for fiction in the Utah Best of State Awards for 2008.

In addition to juggling the demands of multi-cultural fatherhood, Simmons serves as President and CEO of White Knight Fluid Handling, Inc., a pump manufacturer serving the semiconductor, solar and LED industries. Co-inventor of fourteen U.S. patents, Simmons has received several manufacturing industry awards, including the international DuPont Plunkett award, given bi-annually for the best new Teflon-based product designs.

Simmons appears frequently as an adoption advocate and to share his experience with international adoption in television, radio and newspaper interviews. He makes regular book club appearances, and is a frequent guest speaker for various civic and other groups to increase awareness about international adoption. Simmons lives with his wife, Amy, and their children in Kamas, Utah.

Format: Paperback
What a wonderful and honest reality based book. Adopting hurt children requires a special level of commitment. Few people have any idea of what the impact of trauma has on child development. To Sing with Frogs offers readers an inside view of what day-to-day life with a person who has had trauma is like.

The idealists may not get the message, but it is so poignant and real. Unsuspecting adoptive parents often have no idea of no idea of what they are undertaking when they choose to help a child who has been so hurt by the trauma in their lives.

Most people know that I have adopted two adolescents who have had extensive histories of trauma-so I get it. Simmons helps people "get it" with his practical, humorous, and direct approach in his book.

Read it----if you have hurt children, you'll love it, and if you don't have them, you will become aware of what they experience and the impact they have on the families they join.

Was so not necessary as I wish there were a 10 star rating! This is a gut wrenching story and more so because it is true. This author definitely is a good writer and has quite a caustic sense of humor. He has a way of making you "feel" and know all the people he talks about. I related because I was adopted at age three sixty-five years ago. The disorders were around back then, just unnamed. I did and still do have what is referred to as RAD but have changed some by choice and the grace of God. It allowed me the empathy and understanding to be a foster parent for fifty-four children, most of them troubled and unwanted teenagers...It was a wonderful experience for eight years and I hope and pray that my involvement helped them move forward with their lives.
This story covers just about all aspects of fostering and adopting...If you are considering either of these, this story will help prepare you for the many challenges but the rewards are worth every challenge.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to teenagers and adults,it may point you in a direction you didn't even know you were going!

I bought the Kindle edition. I've read through it twice. I have learned so much. I understand the adoption process and I understand why Russia. It would also be my choice. To Sing Frogs is about love, family, and friendships. About losing loved ones and never seeing them again. Some parts made me cry while others made me laugh. Reading is my main hobby since going on disability in 2011. I would recommend this book to all ages, to all walks of life. If you are thinking of adoption, please read this book first. I love the book and I love seeing all the kids on my FB page. I hold Jack in a special place in my heart,,you will too.

From the first page you will be drawn in by this story. Well written by one of my favorite authors and also one of my
favorite cousins. Thanks, John, for letting me experience this story with you before it was written. You and Amy have shown the rest of us what selfless love is. They are all beautiful children that you have given a wonderful chance to have a better life. So sad to hear that Russia is closing it's borders to adoption. My heart goes out to the children who have been left behind.
Love ya, Jamie

John and his wife Amy decided to adopt two girls from Russia to add to their family of boys. Their journey before, during, and after the adoption is told in this realistic look at foreign adoption. The author doesn't sugar coat anything. He deals with emotions, hardships, blessings, and miracles. The two little girls that they initially decided to add to their home soon grew to more as they witnessed first hand the need in the orphanages.

It's a true look at the reality of adopting outside your comfort zone. But I felt the author did a great job of showcasing the blessings as well as the difficulties. The style of writing is very clear and concise, but still has an infusion of heart and soul. While the book was probably written primarily to encourage adoption, it can definitely be read by the causal reader. I enjoyed reading this book and feel the author will be very successful in promoting adoption using this method.

I received this book free of charge from SS/PR in exchange for my honest review.

This may not be equal to Steinbeck, but it has been written with heart. Every set back, every triumphs you are with Amy and John. Amy is the heart , John is the power. I enjoyed reading about how he fretted and second guessed himself at all times. How John wanted only children who looked like them. He discovered that love can happen no matter what the child may look like. That people of all nationality can hold the same need and desires , and willingly open their arms to except a child. Thank you for your inspirational story.

Back about 14 years ago I very badly wanted to adopt internationally. I did not have any family suport however, and I realized without that it was not an option. Reading through Simmons' book makes me almost relieved that I never got that far along in my journey. I don't know if we could have handled it, as much as I would have loved to adopt and change even just one life forever. Very moving, heartwarming book.
