Review
Dan's stories skirt the soft underbelly of a world filled with invisible people we never see but know are there. His characters are deliciously real; some suited perfectly for dysfunctional daytime TV talk shows. If these were his invisible friends in childhood or from his world travels, then those dark encounters lead to a brilliantly-written palate of compelling stories. And who knows? Some could be true. --Mike Morin, broadcast personality, columnist and author of Fifty Shades of Radio
The first story, Little Warrior, in Dan Szczesny s new book of short stories is a soaring, tender and intimate account of two endearing and quirky characters whose lives and personalities are polar opposites. And yet, from the compelling first four pages, we somehow know, improbably, that they will come together. . . . Szczesny rocks us back and forth in a beautiful balance of pace and narrative, building the anticipation toward the end with a delicate and steady hand. Threading throughout the whole story, and binding it together as with all the stories in the book is the author s exquisite eye for the natural world, the physicality of place, the characters deep connections to the land and its living inhabitants. Beautiful, evocative, these stories are ultimately about love in all its possibilities and manifestations. --Becky Dennison Sakellariou, author of Earth Listening

His newest book, U & Me: Reflections from the Fatherhood Frontier, is a collection of essays exploring parenting and fatherhood.

The stories in "Sing" chart a course across the U.S., ranging from the wilderness of Alaska to the dusty plains of South Dakota to the familiar territory of rural New Hampshire. Much of it is work focused. Szczesny writes with authority about people working a variety of different jobs, often blue collar, and (as far as I know!) gets his details just right. His own experiences as a traveler have probably informed some of this, but good research has got to play a big role as well.
I ended up liking the far-flung and/or historical stories the most, I think. Among the modern-day mundane-setting ones, there's a story that's too short to go anywhere ... and there's another (the title story) that is the longest and also the most off-putting, with a main character who does horrible things with no (included) justification. In fact, I'm not sure why that latter story deserved to be the title story. "Little Warriors" and "Gold Dust" were terrific stories with titles that catch your ear.
But overall, this is the work of a fine writer confident in his prose and capable of evoking the reader's empathy for people often otherwise tossed aside or caricatured (in both real life and fiction).
For characters we have the people on the fringes of these various worlds, fighting for just a breath of dignity. “Gold Dust” rides that ancient conflict between a rancher and developers, but the author’s sympathy even for the rancher’s antagonist lends a new and poignant twist to an old sort of story. “More Than Breath” delineates the decline of a once promising jazz musician in language that catches at the nub of disappointment and regret. The centerpiece, though, is the title story—“Sing” is of nearly novella length and explores a small city’s S&M scene through the eyes of an especially unsettling protagonist.
Smart, well-crafted stories from a big-hearted writer.
