I don't think I can fully express how wonderful is the Wee Sing series. The compilers have put together a treasure trove of childhood music and fun -- and each CD in the series has a different flavor. Many of the pieces are part of classic childhood lore that the authors worked to preserve so that they wouldn't die out -- everything from nursery rhymes, to folk songs, to songs sung during games, to patriotic songs, to songs for camping and hitting the open road.
The particular songs on this CD are very nice -- they summon up images that the child can use for pretending in all sorts of ways. But even if your child just wants to listen, there's a lot of great stuff. I particularly love the "Walk through the Forest" that borrows from various classical pieces to summon up images of different animals.
But the authors make an occasional original contribution to the set, and some of them are really nice. One of them has become a cherished family favorite -- "The Little Caterpillar" by Pam Beall. It has a beautiful and poignant melody and most any parent might find it symbolic as they tackle the challenges of teaching their little ones new skills and training them for independence -- even when you really want just to hug them closer and never let them out of arm's reach!
We have a very bright little girl who is doggedly working through a few communications challenges, and the song has special meaning for us as she "inches her way along" and comes closer to flying on her own. The lyrics:
The little caterpillar inched his way across the branch,
Nibbling leaves along the way.
He looked up in the sky and saw a pretty butterfly,
And he wondered if he'd fly some day.
Butterfly, butterfly,
How you fly so free,
Butterfly, butterfly,
Wish that I could be,
Able to fly so high up in the sky
Like a beautiful butterfly.
The little caterpillar formed a cozy little shell,
Then curled up with a sleepy sigh,
He dreamed sweet dreams of butterflies
and hoped that someday soon
He'd be flying high up in the sky.
The little caterpillar woke and wriggled from his shell,
Feeling something very new.
And then he saw his pretty wings as they began to flutter,
And up into the sky he flew.
Butterfly, butterfly,
Now I fly so free,
Butterfly, butterfly,
Can't believe it's me,
Able to fly so high up in the sky,
I'm a beautiful butterfly.
Speaking of repeats, unfortunately, there are some repeats on this CD and the Wee Sing Dinosaurs CD, which we also own. The boys don't notice, but I don't think the dinosaur songs are the greatest and I hate owning them twice. If it weren't for that fact, I'd give this CD 5 stars.
