For the first time since I returned to work, I contemplated a sickie. Well, I didn't really, but I did a thorough self-examination for coughs, colds and headaches just to make sure I was fit enough to go to work. I wanted to stay in bed with Jude...and Rhion.
Rhion...that bloody name threw me every time. I had to keep thinking of the line where they joke about Rhion rhyming with lyin. Anyways, I loved her character. Even with a very real and strong fear of stepping out of her front door, she is still one of the strongest characters I've ever met. She wears her scars with honour and copes with her accident by putting pen to paper...or fingers to keyboard. Her family are the men who protect her and her best friend Brianna. There are other people in her life that she calls family, but for me, The Guardians and Brianna are the real ones.
Jude was a bit of a mixed up character to me. The repercussions of one night changed his life forever. His dreams and ambitions were ruined with one phone call. I find it interesting that the one phone call that ruined his life is never mentioned again. For me, I wish it had been discussed and acknowledged that protocol had been breached and a career ended because he was guilted into a call out when he was off-duty. It probably stuck in my head more because I just finished a great story about an Emergency Call Centre. Anyways...
So, two people affected by one night and left with scars to show they survived. One stepped up and opened her wings, the other stayed in his cocoon stuck in the nightmare. Both hoping to one day be in the other company. One to share her dreams and the other to apologise for the nightmare.
There was times reading Singe that I felt like I was reading my story. Rhion has scars and lives in the book world...yep, that's me. Luckily, I don't have millions of dollars that people feel like they need to murder, bribe or suck up to me (I could handle a little sucking up, but I'd prefer to leave the murder and bribery to Rhion). When Rhion mentions authors that I consider my authors, I couldn't help but love her more. Her chats about books are what the romance book world is for me.
The one thing that I struggled with (for the characters) were their dastardly family relations. All of them made me want to throw things and wish for more for them. One, in particular, I wanted to pack her up and ship her out of the hell she lived. Luckily, her mum could be bought off and by the end of the story, there were improvements.
Singe made my little heart sing. I loved it from start to finish. I never felt like throwing my kindle, if anything, I was like a little child with my kindle wanting it in touching distance like it was a new toy. I love new toys and this story and author (new to me), was like receiving a new toy and finding out that there were more just like it waiting at the shop when I was ready.
Thank you, Aly Martinez, you have a new freaky fan (I promise not to stalk you too much).
When Jude Levitt and Rhion Park find themselves face to face 4 years after Rhion almost died in a fire the uncertainty of their unexpected reunion had me gasping right along with them. What both of them have been through since that horrible day is relayed piece by piece as the story progresses along. We get alternate points of view and at times it almost crushed me to read what they both endured while apart. And I'm not sure I have ever read such a positive character like Rhion. She took her pain and somehow turned it into a positive. Sure she still has issues and a fear of being left alone and out of her apartment, but there is this radiance that glows from within her. There was no way Jude could have ever resisted her. I fell a bit in love with her too!
As we watch as they fall for each other and begin to trust again, there is still a mountain of unanswered questions and the author certainly makes us wait for those answers. At times I was as frustrated as Jude was, with her skirting of his queries. But it all makes perfect sense given what both have been through and the urge to protect one another from more pain. I loved that Jude got Rhion, even when he was ready to throttle her for being less than candid. Their ongoing banter was perfect.
The entire Guardian security crew is a steady influence on Rhion and Jude as the new man on board has a ton of hurdles to overcome before he is considered one of them. I love these GUYS! They made me laugh more than once and by the looks of things, these alpha hotties will be melting more panties as each of their stories are told.
There is a ton going on in the book and the reader needs to pay close attention to details. There is an underlying story that has the Guardian guys always on their guard wrt Rhion and it really is blended beautifully with the romance between Jude and Rhion. Jude is a protective Alpha male and he is super sexy. He and Rhion enjoy many passionate tryst which are always a plus.
It's a great read and I honestly can't wait for more from this series.
Really well done.
Singe is a story about forgiveness, overcoming obstacles and finding love.
With the heaviness of guilt weighing him down, Jude must figure out a way to be a survivor. He knows all too well that our choices have consequences and living with them can be hell. It is the memory of butterfly that haunts him.
Rhion has come to terms with her past, it is in the present, where the demons chase her. Living partly in her fantasy world while trying to adjust to her reality, she has never forgotten him.
I love Aly's ability to make me laugh, gasp, and swoon all in the same paragraph. I don't know of any other author who does that for me.
Another thing Aly is good at is the Plot Twist. I went back and reread some of my other reviews and found I commented about being surprised by the plot twist in nearly every review.
Leo James and Sarah! I loved these character from the Wrecked and Ruined series and I loved reading about them in this book. I felt like we were visiting long lost friends. I realize Aly has just introduced us to new friends, and I cannot wait to read the rest of the Guardian Protection men!
