Bought this machine to use for home sewing..wanted a heavier machine like my old Singer 620.Initially bought a Brother SQ 9185..returned it because of various issues..and I wasn't sold on the fact that an 8 pound machine could hold up to any real sewing. I love the weight and power this Singer has..yes it is mechanical and doesnt have many bells and whistles but it does have these things I wanted....a presser foot pressure adjustment...a nicely sized freearm..and an awesome bobbin winder.I haven't used the needle threader. It does seem a little noisier than a computerized machine but it is mechanical. The stitches all have to be set up by the dials but that can be a good thing. Just make sure you thread properly and I think you will be pleased if you want a good reliable workhorse. So far I have been very pleased with it and have ordered accessory presser feet to do hems and such. It will make blind hems but doesnt come with a presser foot for that.I haven't experienced any of the problems with mine as of yet. I am a sewist that hasn't sewn in over 20 years..so this machine reminds me of the ones I learned on. Love it so far. Looking forward to using it for home decor projects. Maybe one day I can upgrade to a Singer 9100.

I bought the Singer 44s from the Walmart store as a gift to my mother 3 months before giving it to her so that I could test it since I had read many skeptical reviews. I could not be happier with my purchase. The singer 44s is a small power house, a real horse working machine! It is not only fast, stitching up to 1000 stitches per minute, but also feels very sturdy and strong. I have tested different stitches in different types of fabrics with no problems. I have already made 2 dresses for my grandmother and also fixed my daughter's back pack, with the latter requiring several layers of thick material to be sewn together. I also love the one step button hole. The machine is extremely easy to use and the directions in the manual are very easy to follow. The only problem I have is that my mother came to visit and when she left so did the Singer 44s which I purchased for her. It leaves me no choice but to purchase a new one for myself since it is heavy duty and sews several types and layers of fabrics with no difficulty. Other than that, the machine does what it is intended for. I have been a seamstress for over 20 years and own an old model Singer (approximately 20 years old), a Pfaff serger, and a Brother embroidery machine. The heavy duty Singer is a must have to complete my collection.

This is a real power house. I have stitched through 12 layers of cotton and 12 layers of flannel. Just for the heck of it I stitched through a leather belt. Machine doesn't do a lot of fancy stitches, but if you want a strong basic machine they don't come much better than this. I had one small problem when I wound up a bobbin. The bobbin would not fill straight, I sent an email to Singer. They said to turn the screw in the center of the post that the thread goes around. I went 1/4 turn CW, and now the bobbin winds up properly. Colors differ. Some 44 S are white and some are gray. When loading a bobbin be sure the thread goes between the two washers and not between the lower washer and the machine. Machine is proving to be very powerful and smooth.

Picked one up at Wal-Mart when my OLD singer was in the shop and I couldn't wait for the replacement. I make "taggies" - baby blankets that are 2 lawyers of fleece or minky and ribbons. It sewed two sides perfectly, like butter, but then no more. I re-read the instructional manual twice, rethreaded it. Nothing worked. I ran on a test on a normal cotton knit fabric and it did a few stitches fine. But the fleece was a whole different ballgame.

I bought this as a machine to have as a backup. It has some nice stitch patterns that work really well for assembly and decorative uses. Uncomplicated and very easy to use. Lightweight and easy to carry around. Not a large machine, but it hasn't walked around on me at all.

Buy the Singer accessories in the case and you will have all the feet you need, plus the even feed foot. Has the right stitches for adding cording as an added decorative embellishment to your project. Use the overcast in foot instead of or if you don't have a serger. Blind hem foot and do your own alterations instead of paying for it.

They call these "heavy duty"... not sure I would, but it has sewn through everything I put under the presser foot without issue. People think "heavy duty" means I can make a very thick leather bag with it... well that's wrong for ALL HOUSEHOLD sewing machines. Forget sewing leather strapping with a household sewing machine, it just won't work. On that note, it feeds very, very well with the box feed. I used it to make a canvas bag and it went through 4 layers plus the strap with barely slowing down. Drop the feed dogs and do some free motion.

1100 stitches per minute and it is still very easy to control... material does NOT walk (side to side) even when going full speed. Speed control is awesome from slow to fast and every thing in between. Slow speed is great and it has the power to punch the needle through the material with ease. No it doesn't have the speed slide control, but not an issue, the foot control works very well.

Use a good quality thread and use good needles... don't cheap out and issues with any sewing machine go away.
