This MGM musical helps to epitomize the genre. The 1952 film starred Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, and Debbie Reynolds. Reynolds's tracks, particularly "All I Do Is Dream of You" tend to make her sound like one of the munchkins from The Wizard of Oz, which is unfortunate. It's Gene Kelly's songs that are the most enjoyable. The title track is still wonderful, and so engaging you'll want to swing on lightpoles all over town. An outtake of Kelly's version of "All I Do Is Dream of You" is another gem, and the M-G-M Studio Orchestra is at its flawless best throughout--even if some of the incidental music sounds like a Tex Avery cartoon score. --Scott Wilson

In my opinion, three characteristics make a great soundtrack. First, you have to have good songs to start with. Second, the soundtrack has to capture the essence of the movie. In other words, you can listen to a song and know exactly what was going on in the movie when that song was playing. Third, listening to the soundtrack should make you want to watch the movie again.
The Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has all of these characteristics. If you doubt how good the songs from Singin' in the Rain are, then, you have not watched the movie enough. Unlike many soundtracks, the Singin' in the Rain soundtrack has ALL of the songs from the movie on it. Plus, it has outtakes and supplemental songs as well.
As you listen to each song, you can recall the exact dance steps that were being performed during that particular part of the song. Also, as you listen to "Would You," you can't help but think of Lina trying to sing it and missing the beat.
Listening to the soundtrack can't help but make you want to watch the movie again. One of the main reasons I purchased the soundtrack was that I do not have the time to watch the movie as much as I would like. Because the soundtrack does indeed capture the essence of the movie, listening to it is ALMOST like watching the movie. Plus, when listening to the soundtrack, you can TRY to do the dance steps from the movie (Not that I can, but it is fun to try.).
The only bad aspect about the soundtrack is some static that is present on a few songs. It is very negligible, though.
With the CD is a 28-page book that has a lot of interesting information in it. Most notable is a note from the authors, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, that tells the story behind Singin' in the Rain.
This is the best CD and soundtrack I have purchased in a long time!

Well, I wish they had "left in" the tapping feet, but otherwise, this album is the original soundtrack all right! I especially liked it that different versions of some songs were used ("Would You", "All I Do Is Dream of You", "Beautiful Girl", etc.), some only slightly different and others fairly radically. Too bad lyrics weren't included in the booklet! If I may be picky, I would have also liked it more were the photos in color. Otherwise, I can't think of anything else to say other than that if the movie's touched your heart, then this CD ought to do the same!

When Singin In the Rain was named the 10th greatest American movie of all time, I was estatic. Truly the witty humor, the stars, setting, and dancing made this movie one of the best. But the biggest factor in this show's success was it's music and the soundtrack captures all the joyment that is felt in the movie. When you buy cd's these days, it's difficult to find more than a few songs that are worth listening to. As for Singin In the Rain, there are dozens of songs that you'll love including: (the title song) Singin In the Rain, Make 'Em Laugh, Moses, Good Morning, Fit As A Fiddle, Broadway Melody Ballet, All I Do Is Dream Of You, etc., etc. With the soundtrack boasting 30 songs, it is definitly a steal for Amazon's asking price.

This version of "Singin' in the Rain" is a unique experience of an original soundtrack from the era of the great movie musicals. Unlike previous versions of the soundtrack, you won't hear taps or dialogue. This version is compiled from the remaining masters and "takes" that could be found. The accompaning booklet is full of insights not only about the movie, but on how the soundtrack was originally recorded. It is a delightful CD which contains quite a few unreleased songs which are a lot of fun. Enjoy!

There's nothing more annoying than a soundtrack that includes dialogue, tapping, and other foley tracks from a film. In the late 80's and early 90's some MGM films received soundtrack releases which were taken from the actual film elements. They were some of the most disappointing purchases I have ever made. Dialogue, tapping, footsteps, crowd noises, applause....if I want all of that I'll make a tape from my videotapes! Thank you Turner and Rhino for finally doing justice to the legacy of the MGM film. You'll find no extraneous noises here, and many of the songs have been remixed from the original multi-miked recordings to true stereo. A highlight of the disc is Debbie Reynolds' original vocals on "Would You?" (some of her vocals were done by Betty Noyes.) Add this one to your collection and then go out and get ALL of the Turner/Rhino MGM soundtracks. There's not a dud among them.

This is the best soundtrack ever made! I love Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds, and Donnald O'Conner. The lyrics and the movie are just wonderful. This is my favorite movie of all time. Gene Kelly is such a good singer and dancer. Singin' in the Rain ROCKS!

It worked fine as a back up for my soundtrack collection.
The addition of delected and cut musical numbers adds to
the enjoyment of this most treasured of all Hollywood
masterpieces, and a reminder that schlock such as "The Artist"
should be in the dust bin, not awarded by the Academy. Let's
not forget the original movie didn't get one nomination.
