Single Bald Female is a smart, funny, heartfelt story of a young woman who receives an unexpected cancer diagnosis. She then must navigate treatments alongside her relationship, a high-pressure job, friendships new and old, and family. I devoured this book within a couple days and found myself vacillating between laughing and crying. A phenomenal debut novel from Laura Price!

Single Bald Female tells the story of Jess, a magazine editor diagnosed with breast cancer aged 31. Newly single, Jess is also dealing with her profound grief at the loss of her own mother to cancer, while worrying about her job, her dad, her future fertility, her best friend who’s struggling with motherhood and post-natal depression, and her new friend Annabel, who she meets at chemo. Single Bald Female is an emotional but also funny and uplifting read about Jess’s ups and downs as she comes to terms with her diagnosis. The balance between the realities of coping with cancer and treatment, and dealing with grief and loss, while also living life and having fun, is perfectly done. It was particularly strong on female friendship and Jess’s fertility worries were dealt with sensitively and rang very true. One to make you laugh and cry. I loved it.

Well, aside from balling my eyes out through it, I loved it. A work of fiction inspired by the author’s real experience of being diagnosed ‘at the way too young age of 29’ with breast cancer. The camaraderie of chemo club, navigating other people’s uncomfortableness, how it changes your life plan, how you look at life and how your friends become a circle of those who are ill or who may probably die, soon.
Life affirmingly bittersweet, but in a world where we are too busy to focus on the now, Single Bald Female helps us place the present more prominently. While, dare I say, schools us entertainingly on being less annoying to our friends with cancer.

This is a beautiful book. I really cared for the wonderful main character who finds out she has cancer and that her boyfriend has cheated on her in the same week. A lot of the book is about her, and the people around her, coming to terms with her diagnosis and her treatment but it’s also about being in your early 30s and working out what you want from your career and relationships. It might sound like this a heavy, sad book - and it certainly made me cry in parts - but it also uplifting and there are lots of very funny parts too. The characters are wonderful, in particular the wise beyond her years Annabel. This will stay with me for a long time. I hope to be able to read more books by Laura Price in the future!

This book tackles some hefty issues - cancer diagnoses, loss of parents, infertility and death, but it manages to do so in a way that leaves you feeling positive and filled with life-affirming optimism. I loved the relationships it explores between the main character and her widowed father, with her best friends with whom she is drifting apart as their lives move in different directions and with her new friends she meets through her cancer diagnosis. It is a vivid and unflinching first-hand account of the realities of a cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy. But there is also lots of humour and plenty of beautiful moments of grabbing life and living it to the full. Its overriding message is one that will be recognisable to many women (and men) in their 30s/40s - that no one really has it all and those that are curating a perfect image of success are bound to be hiding cracks. And it celebrates the freedom of admitting to that struggle and being honest and supportive to those around you - family, friends, lovers - as you all tackle life's ups and downs together. I raced through it and finished it in just over a day which is always a sign that I am fully engaged with the world of the characters and couldn't put it down until I knew how it turned out in the end.

This book really struck a chord with me. As someone who's gone through treatment for breast cancer myself I could totally relate to the experience Jess went through. I was 57 when diagnosed and had chemo, a lumpectomy and radiotherapy. Far from being depressing I found this book uplifting and honest. Well done Laura
