The pages are a nice cream color and perhaps a bit thicker than regular Bible pages. I love that the font size is bigger and there is good space in the margins to take notes, draw, etc. I used regular Crayola colored pencils on the pages for my Good Morning Girls study and I would say they leave a slight shadow on the back side of the page, but nothing that makes the Bible illegible or hard to read.
If you were considering the ESV Single Column Journaling Bible with the 7.5 font...do yourself a favor and spend 4 extra dollars to get this one. It is so worth it!
My only complaints are that the corners are NOT rounded and one came out of the box slightly bent. In the short time I've owned it, some of the black coloring has come off the corners. Also, the front cover seems to get stuff on it. It sounds weird but the cover is a matte black and yet there are some shiny black patches on the front. This is the only reason I took off 1 star.
1) Large ESV Bible (on left) next to the regular ESV Single Column Journaling Bible with 7.5 lexicon font -- spine comparison.
2) Side by side with Paper-Mate mechanical pencil as size reference -- cover/size comparison
3) Inside of Bible.
4) Front of a colored page (with colored pencils and wording in Paper-Mate Flair Pens).
5) Back of that colored page with light shadow from pencils and bleed-thru from Flair Pens.
As for the Bible format, as usual Crossway has done a good job. The print is line matched, meaning the lines on the opposite side of
each page are printed directly behind the lines on the front, which greatly reduces ghosting. I also like the single column format, which has a comfortable line length for reading. There are no cross references, but there are some helpful text footnotes on some pages. The front has a
thicker page with several lines for recording your name, date, etc. There is a table of contents, an alphabetical list of the books of the Bible, and Preface about the ESV translation in the front. The back has no maps, but includes a table of weights, measures, and money. There is also a year-long reading plan. There is one ribbon marker. The binding is sewn, not glued. The hardback Summer Garden cover pattern is attractive and the Bible comes in a nice slipcase for bookcase or other storage. The Bible measures about 9-1/2" x 7" x 2" thick, and isn't too heavy considering its size. As for the ESV translation, it is a literal translation done in modern but not colloquial English; beautiful language while also being easy to read and understand. All in all, this edition does an excellent job of balancing print size, paper quality, overall size and weight, and text layout with room for notes in the wide margins.
Additional edit: After using this journaling Bible for a couple of months, I cannot say enough good things about it! The paper quality is outstanding for Bible paper. I accidentally wrote a note using a M nib fountain pen with bottled ink. There was some ghosting, but amazingly the ink did not actually bleed through.
The larger font and cream-colored paper are very easy on the eyes for late night reading.
I love the generous margins for notes (hooray!), and the light grey lines don't distract from the text.
Note-taking areas are just that – open areas with lines – with no other decoration, ornamentation, etc. (Artsy people might prefer something different but I love this set-up.)
Hard cardboard cover really helps with note-taking (giving a more stable surface to write on), and it lays fairly flat.
The paper is rather thin. Printed text “ghosts” somewhat through the page. ZeeBrite highlighters and Pentel (ballpoint) pens also show through.
The cover easily shows fingerprints, etc. and seems to be easily scratched (showing white cardboard beneath).
Even with the few minor issues I noted, I absolutely love this bible, and so glad I purchased it. Looking forward to having it with me for years to come.
