In an age where neither society nor the church knows what to do with gay Christians, Greg Coles tells his own story.
Let's make a deal, you and me. Let's make promises to each other.
I promise to tell you my story. The whole story. I'll tell you about a boy in love with Jesus who, at the fateful onset of puberty, realized his sexual attractions were persistently and exclusively for other guys. I'll tell you how I lay on my bed in the middle of the night and whispered to myself the words I've whispered a thousand times since:
"I'm gay."
I'll show you the world through my eyes. I'll tell you what it's like to belong nowhere. To know that much of my Christian family will forever consider me unnatural, dangerous, because of something that feels as involuntary as my eye color. And to know that much of the LGBTQ community that shares my experience as a sexual minority will disagree with the way I've chosen to interpret the call of Jesus, believing I've bought into a tragic, archaic ritual of self-hatred.
But I promise my story won't all be sadness and loneliness and struggle. I'll tell you good things too, hopeful things, funny things, like the time I accidentally came out to my best friend during his bachelor party. I'll tell you what it felt like the first time someone looked me in the eyes and said, "You are not a mistake." I'll tell you that joy and sorrow are not opposites, that my life has never been more beautiful than when it was most brokenhearted.
If you'll listen, I promise I'll tell you everything, and you can decide for yourself what you want to believe about me.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"To say this book is important is a painful understatement. It is the candid, moving, intensely personal story of a gay young man who wants to live his life under the authority of King Jesus and who refuses to accept the comforting answers proffered by different parts of the culture. Superbly written, this book stands athwart the shibboleths of our day and reminds us what submission to King Jesus looks like, what it feels like. This book needs to be thoughtfully read by straight people and by gay people, by unbelievers and by Christians. It is not to be read with a condescending smirk, but with humility." -- D. A. Carson, president, The Gospel Coalition, research professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
"Before we can speak, we must listen. Especially to those who have been marginalized, pushed aside, and undervalued. This book serves as an opportunity to do just that. To hear from a man who knows and loves Jesus and wrestles honestly with himself and God. Listen to him. Hear his story. Enter into another perspective, a narrative that is often untold." -- Andy Mineo, Hip Hop Artist
"Greg has written a book that is a delight to read both because of the beauty of his writing and his main message: that our good God made no mistakes in either making him the way that he is or asking him to live life the way that he is." -- Ed Shaw, author of Same-Sex Attraction and the Church
"I found Greg's poignant autobiography not just to be intellectually and theologically honest, but also to be a poetic and wonderfully human book. Single, Gay, Christian is nourishment for the soul of anyone who seeks to love Jesus in our times. It captured my heart as I am sure it will yours. I loved it!" -- Debra Hirsch, author of Redeeming Sex
"Greg Coles has poured himself out beautifully in this transparent account of his life with Christ as a young gay man. He asks whether the Bible leaves room for monogamous same-sex relationships and agonizes over how the church will treat singleness and sexual minorities. His answers are not easy. Especially for him. If you want to be inspired by one man's deep and unfailing love of Jesus, read this book. If you or someone you love is a follower of Jesus who happens to be gay, this is a must-read." -- Carolyn Carney, director of spiritual formation and prayer, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship
"I couldn't put it down. The blend of experience, wisdom, and beautiful prose grabbed hold of my heart and sent me on an adventure. Thank you, Greg, for challenging so much of what I thought I knew about the topic (and people!) of faith and sexuality. I cannot more highly recommend this book." -- Preston Sprinkle, president of The Center for Faith, Sexuality & Gender, author of People to Be Loved
"Endearing, raw, and honest. A heartfelt contribution to the growing literature on openly gay lives of fruitful obedience in the traditional churches." -- Eve Tushnet, author of Gay and Catholic
"Single, Gay, Christian is a great read for anybody, but especially those interested in questions of marriage, sexuality, and relationships in general in the context of the church. Coles is thoughtful, intelligent and thorough in his treatment of an important subject." -- Jake Raabe, the Baptist Standard, May 11, 2017
"Coles's work will raise questions for those involved in the debates about Christianity and sexuality because it pushes for a third way between discarding tradition and ignoring identity." -- Publishers Weekly, June 12, 2017
"I would recommend this book to every pastor, to every parent who has a child who has 'come out' or is thinking about it, and to every believer in Christ who wishes to minister in a more loving and understanding manner to those in the LBGTQ community." -- Douglas C. Bozung, The Journal of Ministry & Theology, Spring 2018
"Coles's book offers a service to Christian leaders to engage in meaningful conversation with a brother in Christ." -- Kevin D. Koslowsky, Presbyterion: Covenant Seminary Review, 44/2 (Fall 2018)

The title of the book takes its cue from the author’s attempt to navigate the waters of being single, gay, and Christian. For Greg, his identity is rooted firmly in Christ. My understanding of Greg’s view, as taken from his writing, is one in which he views his homosexuality as being a minor note in light of Christ, but as something that is present and being informed, transformed and redeemed in Christ for the glory of God.
Greg is unapologetically from the beginning an evangelical Christian. He makes clear through his witness that our only response as evangelicals to the current sexual revolution is a further commitment to a traditional sexual ethic. In his asides, which are personally my favorite parts of the book, he stresses a gospel of grace and hope. That our only hope is one in which Christ redeems the entirety of our being. Like Wesley Hill’s classic ‘Washed and Waiting,” there is a strong emphasis on living in the expectant hope of Christ.
As someone who is gay, theologically conservative, and Christian; it is a delight to be able to add this book to the few I am able to recommend as spiritually healthy and informative on the subject of being gay and Christian. This book is not just important because of the scarcity of available texts by people who are personally invested, it is stunning from the beginning because of the great insight and wisdom Greg provides in living under the authority of Jesus. He illustrates in beauty what it means to live and declare above all that Jesus is worth our all. The book is superbly written and was an enjoyment to read. For anyone who is learning or wanting to learn how to love others who are LGBTQ well in Christ, this is simply a must read. Greg paints brilliantly through his words the strange place we as evangelicals currently put our sexual minorities in. It is refreshing and with great delight to see a new voice enter the scene with such a well-written memoir that will help to bring understanding for what it means to be a sexual minority in the body of Christ.
Would I recommend Single, Gay, Christian? YES! I have already ordered a few copies to give away to friends as gifts.
Greg Coles has decided that Jesus has called him to lifelong celibacy. He effortlessly weaves his own heart-wrenching story into contemporary debates about the status of gay people in the church. He answers questions like, What should we call people attracted to the same sex - gay, same sex attracted, queer, homosexual? - What kind of transformations in heart and life should we expect from gay people who meet Jesus - should they become straight or stay celibate? - What aspects of evangelical Christian culture are alien to biblical fellowship and discipleship? - and my favorite: Why do so many churches assume that masculinity means you eat a lot of meat?
This book is, thankfully, not a self-centered book. It is not a tell-all, roast-the-evangelicals, look-at-how-bad-they-treated-me-and-how-enlightened-I-now-am sort of book. Rather, this book has many heroes. It is full of everyday Christians who loved Greg Christianly. It also, thankfully, is not a political book. This book does not consider whether gay marriage should be legal, but instead asks hard questions about the assumptions of the evangelical church. Greg is taking a risk with this book, because he is not recognizably conservative and he is not recognizably liberal. So either every one will read him and think he is a traitor to his own kind, or our fractured community will read him and find in his book a place to come and reason together. I hope and pray that this book will be the kind conversation starter it was meant to be.
It is my hope that this book will find an audience beyond those who have questions about LGBTQ issues in the church. It is, at its most basic level, the story of one young man trying to live a good Christian life, to read the Bible and obey it, to love his church and find satisfaction in Christ alone. We can all learn something from that.
Coles's is one of those rare and, yes, DELIGHTFUL voices that takes you along for the ride and allows you to think differently for a while, all without even a hint of judgment for those who remain unswayed the other side of the adventure. Coles tells you about his life, his thoughts, his actions and not what your life, thoughts, and actions ought to be.
This is not to mention Coles's superb writing style, which is at all times fresh, heartfelt, and compelling. Part memoir, part exegesis, "Single, Gay, Christian" is all gripping. I finished the whole book in one night, and, believe me when I say, I am REALLY picky. This felt like Augustine's "Confessions" modernized and evangelized in the best possible way. Timely, playful, deep. Honestly, I'm out of adjectives, so read it yourself and come up with some new ones :-)
