This is my favourite of the 6 box singles sets. I already have most of these singles on cd that I got when they were first released. But the extra cuts here were the main reason I got this, most of which were available only on vinyl when originally released. True, the packaging itself is minimal. But I think the music really speaks for itself. You don't need a 25 page booklet or some rambling essay accompanying the box, as many artists do in order to justify charging a higher price. What you get here is 6 of Depeche Mode's best singles, with some truly great remixes that haven't aged a day since they were released. Timeless classics. And b-sides that are often as good as, and sometimes better than, their a-side. A few live tracks are thrown in to show you that Depeche Mode is a great live band ( yes, I know they rely on digital equipment, samplers, keyboards and prerecorded drum tracks, but Martin Gore is one hell of a guitar player, and Dave Gahan delivers some of his best vocal performances, especially on the cuts taken from the Devotional Tour.) In all, a great set, with a reasonable price. Another must have for the serious DM fan.

The fifth box set by Depeche Mode covers the period from 1990 to 1993. During this era, the Mode were multiplatinum superstars and enjoyed back-to-back hit albums "Violator" and "Songs and Faith of Devotion," the latter of which went Number One. Here, we get the singles "Policy of Truth," "World in My Eyes," "I Feel You," "Walking in My Shoes," "Condemnation," and "In Your Room," with the remixes and b-sides as they originally appeared on the 12 inch singles. I always liked the Mode's 1990 "Violator," but "Songs of Faith and Devotion" was an all too vain attempt to blend electronic music with grunge. Still, it yielded some decent results such as "In Your Room" and "I Feel You," and I also liked the b-side "My Joy" and the Adrenaline mix of the album cut "Higher Love." In my mind, the most successful of the six discs is "World in My Eyes," which has the excellent b-sides "Sea of Sin" and "Happiest Girl" and Jon Marsh's house remix of the title cut. In fact, all the remixes of "World in My Eyes" are true standouts, but Marsh's version is the true winner. While this period may not cover Depeche Mode at its most inspired, it's still a no-brainer of a purchase for diehard completists.

As with some of the Singles Box sets that I've owned from Depeche Mode, I've taken a long listen to some of the non-album/B-sides/remixes included on each CD. Most of them are just "throwaways" -- however, I do want to point out the awesome tenacity/longevity that this band truly has. While churning out some electronica/dance melodies, they have continued to evolve and morph into an even bigger brand. The singles included on this set show exactly why. For example, we have the luscious tracks "Policy Of Truth" and "World In My Eyes" from 1990's "Violator." The other awesome, you-can't-stop-listening-to-these tracks are "Happiest Girl" and "Sea Of Sin."

In 1993, Depeche Mode completely went in another direction, both spiritually and religiously with their LP, "Songs Of Faith And Devotion." Not to mention that Dave Gahan is at his ANGRIEST with "I Feel You", "Condemnation", "Higher Love" and "Walking In My Shoes." And most certainly, Martin Gore has HIS wonderful moment with "One Caress." Too bad that he doesn't sing the lead on more of Depeche's catalog, it would have been great.

20 years after the album's release, the band used a similar theme for 2013's "Delta Machine", which I will review at a later time once I've heard it. But as for the entire Singles Box set, I stress once again that you need to hear the song samples that Amazon provides -- or better yet -- just stream or download each remix/B-side from official/legal music sites. :)
