This is a good story, which I enjoyed. The poor rating is because my overall experience was bad. The story is $0.99 US, but that rises to $2.36 CDN. I wasn't willing to spend that much on a short story, but I decided I would for a novella. I looked at the product description, which put the file size at 399KB with a print length of 72 pages. That seemed to be a novella. However, only 30% of the content was the story for which I paid. The rest was a preview of "First Grave on the Right". A preview is essentially a marketing tool for the publisher that shouldn't increase the price, and it should be made clear how much of the content is previews. I realize most of this is in the control of the publisher, not Amazon or the author, but anyone else buying this story should be aware that they are paying for a 22 (approx.) page story, not a 72 page novella. I would also like to see the table of contents available before purchase so that one could check for previews, etc.

I think For I Have Sinned is worth reading, it's set in Charley's world and told from the POV of the recently deceased. A woman finds herself alone with Charley, which makes her dead. The question is how did she end up that way? The answer is satisfying and surprising at once. I don't think For I Have Sinned would stand alone. It is also a very short story - only about a third of the file is the tale itself, the rest is an excerpt from each of the three planned Charley Davidson stories. I'm a big fan of this new series, so I don't regret reading this but it might not satisfy someone expecting more.

While I was reading FOR I HAVE SINNED (A Charley Davidson Story), I forgot that it was a short story; I definitely wanted more! It was that good, and author Darynda Jones was that able to completely pull me into Charley's world in so few words. That is true talent, IMHO. And let us not forget that Charley's loveable butt-kicking, devil may care personality doesn't hurt either!

FOR I HAVE SINNED is told from the perspective of one of Charley's customers. She is a young woman who has died but has yet to move on. She is drawn to the bright light that is Charley Davidson, who just happens to be a private investigator...and the Grim Reaper. Charley then does what she does best: helps the woman remember who she is and how she died, ties up any loose ends, and then sends her into the bright light.

I really enjoyed seeing Charley and her world through someone else's eyes. This lovely little snippet lets us learn more about Charley, who she is, and how important she is to the recently departed. FOR I HAVE SINNED has whetted my appetite even more for book 3, THIRD GRAVE DEAD AHEAD. FOR I HAVE SINNED is placed somewhere between book 2 and book 3, and probably should not be read by a first time reader. But if you love Charley Davidson, then FOR I HAVE SINNED is a definite must!

Darynda Jones put out this free little novella to share with her fans on the Heroes & Heartbreakers website. It gives us the story of a recently deceased woman who is drawn to Charley. Unlike the novels, which are told by Charley in the first person, the novella is told from the perspective of the ghost. I liked this, because it gives us an outside perspective on Charley, herself.

There's not a lot going on here, but there is a little bit of Reyes in the story and a peek inside Charley's psyche where he is concerned. You certainly don't have to read this one to enjoy and understand the series, but it is a little something extra for fans. It's labeled as book 1.5 in the series. But according to the author, herself, it was written after book 3 and references an event in that book. I suggest reading it after Third Grave Dead Ahead. Almost 4 stars.

A fantastic Novella from the perspective of the ghost as Charley Davidson, the main character of First Grave on the Right and the upcoming Second Grave to the Left solves the mystery of her death.

That's what Charley does, among other things, she's the Grim Reaper and souls flock to her. Those souls that are unable to pass on, usually because they were murdered, seek out Charley for help in resolving the mystery! Charley is one of those characters that you wish was your best pal, her sense of humor is wicked and her loyalty knows no bounds.

I highly recommend this novellla as well as First Grave on the Right and her upcoming novel Second Grave to the Left! It's a wonderful read and the only short-coming is just that! It's to short! It has me looking forward to the next

So, yes, I'm unashamedly still on the Darynda Jones high. I was about to dive into Book 2 when I happened upon her website and found this novella tagged #1.5, For I Have Sinned. Imagine if I'd read out of order?! Ummm, no...no one needs to see me that deranged. HA! In truth, I'd have kicked my own butt for missing out on this beaut. I wonder, though: Why this short story before Second Grave on the Right? What HAD to be said quickly and not fleshed out in a full length or even incorporated into...Oh. I see derangement is my usual process. On to the sin...

This poor woman doesn't know who she is or how she died, but she gravitated toward Charley for help. The goal for Charley is to help her cross over, part and parcel of being the grim reaper, but this woman is confused and needs help remembering the details of her death before leaving earth.

"Is it normal for people to forget who they are after they, you know, pass?"
She shrugged while stirring her coffee. "Doesn't happen often, but it does happen. Especially if the death was particularly traumatic."

A story of courage, of heartbreak, when success happens without you. Knot-in-my-throat kind of sad. Hand-over-heart kind of joy.

Perhaps it was the POV of the character, Jo, instead of Charley that Ms. Jones considered the format? Since I've yet to embark on book #2, my hypothesis is yet unproven. Truth is, it doesn't really matter: Darynda Jones captures moments. When Charley's able to pass on a message from the departed to the suffering, she bowls me over. Charley finds a way to ease the burden of "unfinished business"; a key word or sentiment because she knows it can make a world of difference.
