When I first purchased "Betrayal", I was also interested in the other side of the story. While "Sins" is definitely the other side, at times it comes across as snarky, others as an apologist, and other times just plain, "Yeah, so?" It comes across more as a smear campaign by someone trying to deflect attention from the real issue. While there are many times when the author admits that something was wrong, he seems to try to blame the wrong on the Boston Globe rather than place it where it really belongs. True, there are many points scored as to the seeming attempt by the Boston Globe to bury the Catholic church using the sexual misconduct by priests as it's weapon of choice, but it would have come across better if it didn't read like a pre-teen trying to get out of trouble by yelling, "Yeah, but...!" Overall, I was disappointed that this wasn't a more professionally done product.

The problem with the book is in its premise- the claim to fight a media "narrative". I can understand a Catholic wishing to defend their faithful hierarchy, but refusing to confront truth is not the way to do it. The book tries to argue facts. Facts that are inarguable, that have been proven many times over. Should the author have chosen to write the book defending the church's current standing on abuse and how it had changed, that would be very different. But the book is trying to rewrite history, and quite ironically, ends up creating a false narrative in doing so.

Falls short of proving it's case

After reading Spotlight I thought it would be good to read a book presenting the other side of the story. Mr. Pierre has some good points about the hypocrisy of the globe over the decades in supporting obvious sexual deviants over the years and the fact that they have anti-Catholic bias. However this is a newspaper and freedom of the press and many newspapers across the nation were doing the same during that time period. People choose to buy the paper and people are able to make up their own minds about what they read. The Archdiocese is an institution that people put their faith in. These priests were in these peoples homes preying on their children.
Some of these doctors who told the Archdiocese these men were okay to return to their work many were only M.D's not specialists. Cardinal Law is a very educated man and how much common sense do you need to realize after over 10x of treatment these abusers were no better than when they first went to treatment. Of course he knew what was happening and allowed this continue over the years. Boston has over 2 million Catholics and this man had the ear of the Pope and had a very good chance of becoming Pope. He supported politicians and community leaders and they fawned all over themselves to get that support. You cannot ignore the court documents and the very fact that these records were sealed and kept from the public. Lest we not forget that the catholic church has attacked various groups over the years suppressed the voices of those who tried to speak their minds. And if we really dig back the catholic church helped Nazis flee to South America.

I think he’s an apologist. He ignored the results of the investigation—248 priest who molested children in Boston alone. Who cares how they got their proof. This nut cares nothing for the thousands of victims of his decrepit and corrupt church.
