Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

No armchair admiral will want to miss this lively portrait of a man who circumnavigated the globe, became the naval nemesis of Spain's Philip II and personified Elizabethan England's coming of age as a sea power. Illustrated.

Review

"* 'Excellent...It deserves to become the standard Drake life. His scholarship is impeccable.' - Frank McLynn, Sunday Telegraph * 'Excellent...he gives us throughout a highly sympathetic though not unbalanced portrait of a remarkable man.' - Linda Colley * 'The scope of his book, and the skill with which he handles generally unreliable sources, is impressive...The accounts of the circumnavigation, the attack on Cadiz and the defeat of the Armada are a comprehensive, and as readable, as any that have yet appeared.' - Brendan King, Literary Review" --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I thought this was a fairly easy read, chocked full of well reasearched facts. However when hard documentation was not available, well argued reasoning is injected to make the intended point. I've read many treatments on Drake and find this to be the most definative.
While there are many missing pieces to Drakes life, the author really gives a good picture of the man and his times without putting him on a pedestal or dragging him through the mud as many authors try. In other words this book is not based on just trying to get another "ANGLE" to Drakes story.
I think you be pleased you read it.

The author has a healthy respect for Drake without becoming too enamored. The author points out at near the end of the book that Drake was the right man at the right time. On Drake's later expeditions (that were failures) the Spanish had fortified their holdings in the new world to a point that made it more difficult for privateers. This, however, does not detract from Drake's earlier success which would not have been accomplished by men of lesser genius.

This was an exceptionally well written account of one of the greatest sailors in history. One sees the man, not just the captain. The information presented is very well researched and as complete as could ever be expected with the spotty records available.

Brilliantly researched and excellently written but a little dry at times . There are so many surprises in this book but the greatest is that pirate who turned into a national hero by heading off the Spanish Armada was a very compassionate man. It was an age when the victrious sailing boat would haul the losers from the water and look after them well .. He hated two things Catholicism and the King of Spain...but his hatred of the Spanish was based on the fact that the Governor of Mexico broke his solemn word and attacked the British fleet , after promising an armistice .
Good reading

Very well done -- excellent historical background as well. Portions of Drake's log are invoked regularly and are very useful.

This outstanding biography is an enjoyable way to review 16th century history as the author draws a balanced portrait of the life of a national hero in the light of his times, and reviews scholarship since and as a result I am now a fan of Sir Francis Drake and will place him in my hall of fame of this world's outstanding leaders, explorers and inspirations. Highly recommended!

Wow incredible book. I loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone with the slightest bit of interest in this period of history.

First the author was very delightful to read. I was often just lost in the enjoyment of the story. I actually felt like I knew Sir Drake personally by the end of the book. The character development was outstanding for biography written 400 years after the death if it's subject.

Second the author had a wonderful subject to write on. Sir Drake was a larger than life character. His accomplishments were almost super human. To top it off he was a gentleman that was easy to like. Biographies about people I like are always so much more fun.

I must admit that it is a fairly long book, certainly not a quick read. However, it was worth every minute of time I put into it.
