Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
Joseph Hooker is not my favorite 19th century scientist. His achievements warrant respect, his friendship with Darwin gave the latter courage to publish the radical book The Origin of Species, his travels (well illustrated here) were exceptionally fruitful and his systematics, flawless. But he spoke badly of people behind their backs then treated them well when in person. He was a hypocrite in short. You won't learn that in this book but it's sadly true...something sinister behind the hero who bestrides these glossy pages...keep it in mind to moderate your admiration of an otherwise admirable man.

An in depth outline of the travel which under-pinned this remarkable man's cotribution to science- botany in particular. It is well writen and illustrated with a fine selection of early plant portraits and photographs
