Review

"A flawless blend of sci-fi, YA fantasy, supernatural events, romance, adventure, action, suspense and intrigue ... The Siren - Laments of Angels & Dark Chemistry - is a one of a kind young adult story and the start of a truly captivating series. I cannot wait to read book 2 and see where this awesome adventure takes us." - Readers' Favorite

"Xuemei has written a very original plot that dances on many story lines of ancient myths, and givens them the most enchanting and invigorating twist ... It is refreshing to read a YA that still has magic in its binding, but are free of Vampires, Zombies, Witches and Werewolves. For this purpose alone, this book would stand out among the rest, but her adept story telling even furthers that agenda." - Online Book Club

"There's such an original plot that many fantasy and sci-fi book lovers will appreciate." - Young Adult Hollywood

"A fascinating maze of mysteries." - Ramblings on Readings

From the Author

Dear Readers,

Though packed with adventure, explosions, and romance, thisseries isn't about action or entangled love interestsAt theheart of The Laments of Angels & Dark Chemistry seriesis the very survival of humankind.

I left clues on the mysteries of human origin, evolution, and ancientcivilizations and wars throughout the first three books, but you'll have your answers in the fourth and last installment.

Long ago, Earth was filled with wars between more advanced species andwars we fought among ourselves and against them. Our ancestors called thesuperior race "the fallen angels," who insisted they were thefirst Earth natives.

As humankind increased in numbers and became a new kind of predator, ourconflict with the angels could no longer be settled. Human spirits couldnot accept the role of "inferior race." Our ancestors chose todie free than live on their knees, and so they devised a weapon and drovethe angels into the space. The cost was deadly--numerous brave men andwomen perished, and by turning back time, destroyed all technology andevery advanced civilization.

Now millions of years have passed.

Humans stand hesitantly at the threshold of a quantum evolution, but therace we exiled has found a way to wage a new war against us. They'veupgraded their magical powers and technology beyond our perception. They're coming to take back Earth.

Unfortunately, the weapon our ancestors deployed has been lost to us. Wedon't know anything about ancient warfare or our secret history. We don'thave the slightest idea that we're facing extinction.

Our only hope rests with Lucienne Lam, the last and most powerful of theSirens, who leads her Sphinxes nation in the fight against the returningangels. She will stand with the last of us to save our planet.

Thanks for reading!

Meg

I've waited months for this story to be published. Having read it now, it exceeded my expectations.

Meg Xuemei's `The Siren' evokes love, suspense, and wonder in this around the world adventure. The perfect combination of fantasy, sci-fi, and romance.

So what do you get when you cross the strong persona of Lara Croft from `Tomb Raider', the technology and imagination from `X-men', the mystery of ancient artifacts and lost worlds from `Indiana Jones', and the romantic tension of `Gone With The Wind'? `The Siren'. Author Meg Xuemei has crafted a novel that will amaze you and keep you deeply engaged.

Not giving away any spoilers, I will start with the plot: unpredictable, forceful, and exciting. From battling with Tibetan Monks, to seeking the powerful "Eye of Time" in a lost civilization, this electrifying plot moves fast. Paralleled with the compelling story line and underlying struggles of Lucienne, Vladimir, Ashburn, Kian, and those who serve the Lam Family, are futuristic technology, supersonic aircraft, fast cars, super mansions in America, a self-sustaining island fortress, espionage, private military, and high-tech quantum technology, all coupled with strong elements of intrigue, wealth, power, and war.

The characters are well developed, likable, and vivid, where their personalities radiate off the pages. Ms. Xuemei does a superb job at cultivating characters who are multifaceted and humanistic, with intelligent and engaging dialogues that gives a verisimilitude dimension that will bridge a connection with you and each character (the tension between Kian and Vladimir, Violet's jealousy, or the dichotomous attraction Lucienne feels for one man who "will offer life disguised as death" and "the other will lead to death with great love").

This author is brilliant at writing relationships between characters. I love the chemistry she puts in between her leading men and women in both the novels I've read by her (this and Love's Prey, which I recommend). Even if the interactions between Lucienne and her lover seemed at times to touch on romance tropes a bit much for what is usually my taste, that only added to the charm. However, the plot at times felt a bit rushed, and there were a few moments in the middle that jarred me a bit out of the story.

Still, the book is an enjoyable read, and certainly worth reading at least once for the writing of Lucienne.

It is pretty well written but I didn't like the Characters and I had a hard time getting into the story. But if you like smoldering desire between two people that you don't really like, you might like this.
The Siren is head of a wealthy and mysterious organization. She has powers given to her as hereditary ruler, but I am almost halfway through the book and I have no idea what the organization is or does. It seems criminal because all of the people in the organization are unsavory, untrusting, and violent. I have no idea. Not my cup of tea.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book and new author. Don't normally read this genre, but decided to give it a shot. Very surprised at the detail and characters. They really came to life for me. The romance was touching and the heroes were spectacular! Left you wanting to read more of Megan Xuemei X's books.

I don’t read much fantasy, but the luminous current of this one carried me away. Lucienne Lam enters the world with a fabulous destiny. Others see it almost from birth, and as she grows older, she deals with the Eye of Time, warrior monks, lost cities, and the killer giant Seraphen. She also falls into two hexed loves, one with Prince Vladimir and the other a dire attraction to the astonishing Ashburn.

The characters are full of sap, the plot abounds with surprises, and Meg Xuemei wastes no words. And like Updike, her jeweled prose brings the world alive. Though futuristic, this universe is more here-and-now than many “realistic” novels’. You hear the battles, feel the facial gestures, and get carried away by the soaring possibilities of love.

I hope THE SIREN finds an audience beyond fantasy. It is rich and brilliant, and people of all kinds will treasure it.

The nonstop action scenes immerse the reader along with the characters, taking me on a great ride! The romance in the book is also amazing. I’m cheering for both Vladimir and Ashburn and keep wondering who Lucienne will end up with.

Recommend it to the fans who want a fast-paced adventure that promises fun.

This is the second book I've read by this talented author (the first was "Love's Prey," which I also highly recommend). But one is different. How can I describe the experience of reading "The Siren"?

The voice and style are unlike anything I've come across before--it's sort of a strange fusion of manga, James Bond, and cyberpunk. You get the impression that Meg X has somehow tapped into a complete, alternate universe filled with fantastic gadgets, exotic locations, and larger-than-life characters. The result is suspenseful, fast-paced, and exhilarating. It's like sampling a new, exotic cuisine ... just open your mind and go with it. This intoxicating feast of mythology, romance, and weird glamour will leave you salivating for the next delicious meal.
