Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Vivid sex scenes and an ambitious story arc can't overcome unremarkable prose and derivative story lines in Quinn's mermaid paranormal romance. When despairing widower Kenneth Randall tries to drown himself, mermaid Tessa Lonike saves his life. He returns to Maine's Little Mer Island to try to reconstruct his unlikely survival, and just happens to have the necessary skills to meet Tessa's needs and begins working for her. Soon Kenneth discovers her secret, and they begin an intimate relationship. Meanwhile, Tessa's ex-fiancé wants Tessa and her sisters to help investigate an artifact site in the Mediterranean that he believes will lead to Ishaldi, the land of their mermaid ancestors. However, the sisters have conflicting feelings when it comes to learning more about their heritage. Psychic powers, weapons, and an unusual biological background add some interest to this otherwise uneven romantic fantasy.

Temperamental lighthouse keeper Tessa Lonike stayed in the family home on the Island of Little Mer even after her sisters Gwen and Addison left and settled on the mainland. The main house has fallen into a state of disrepair and she is struggling to make ends meet. Tessa and her sisters have a secret that they hold very close because of fear of what would happen should the outside world discover they are mermaids.

As Kenneth Randall stands on the ocean shoreline he can see Tessa's lighthouse tower light twinkling in the distance. Kenneth is a man without hope. After suffering a tragic loss, he no longer can see the value in life. He therefore enters the cold stormy sea determined to end his existence. Tessa sees the stranger enter the water and isn't about to allow him to commit suicide and uses her extraordinary abilities to save him.

Once Kenneth heals physically and emotionally from his ordeal, he returns to Little Mer Island to try and piece together what happened that night and, as well, he is drawn there by a very hazy dream that is Tessa. She is less than happy to see him disembark from the supply boat but is forced to allow Kenneth to stay when she learns that her sister Gwen has hired him to do much needed handyman repairs on her house. Gwen virtually blackmails her reclusive sister to allow him to stay and help.

Tessa and Kenneth's relationship therefore starts off on a rather adversarial footing at least on her part. However, when he proves to be a hard and able worker she quickly warms up to him. Then he catches her in her fish form and puts two and two together with respect to the identity of his rescuer. Kenneth dearly wants a relationship with Tessa, but after being betrayed and hurt by her previous fiance she is much more cautious.

Kenneth Randall was so filled with grief from the murder of his wife, the shocked man wandered into the ocean and nearly drowned. A woman saved his life leaving him on the beach supposedly with no memory of her saving his life.

Ten months since the good Samaritan rescued him, Ken returns to Point Rock Harbor on barrier island Little Mer, Maine to thank his angel and to put to rest his recurring dream of a sea nymph saving him. Little Mer Island lighthouse keeper Tessa Lonike is unhappy with the arrival of the man she pulled out of the sea almost a year ago. He should not have remembered her or what happened to him on that day. However, her sister Gwen is euphoric when the visitor offers to repair things. As Ken and Tessa become acquainted he figures out her deep watery secret and becomes protective when her former fiancé archeologist Jake Massey arrives claiming he has information on the heritage of the sisters.

The Dark Tides oceanic romantic fantasy is a fun tale starring a thorny acerbic shapeshifter who learns where good intentions lead and the obstinate man she rescued from the icy sea. The story line is fast-paced, but the villain is a caricature with no redeeming quality rather than a real adversary. Still readers will enjoy this entertaining tale due to the relationship between the lead couple.

Siren's Call is the first novel in the Dark Tides trilogy.

Tessa Lonike enjoys a quiet life on Little Mer Island. Kenneth Randall is a man who has lost all that was important to him. He decides to leave his pain behind and sets out into the ice cold waters. Tessa uses her mermaid abilities to save him. Kenneth awakes from the ordeal with only dim memories of the red haired woman who saved him. He returns to little Mer Island a year later to seek out his mystery savior.

The desire between the two is strong, but Tessa keeps her distance as she has been burned before by an ex-fiance, Jake.

Jake returns to the island with promises of helping Tessa find her lost heritage. This begins a wild adventure under the sea and leaves Tessa with mixed feelings and some tough decisions to make.

I felt the story was well written and left me wanting more! Devyn touches on passion and romance, but also magic and adventure. The ending gave a peek at what is to come in the following books.

I couldn't put this book down! I have already read part 2, Siren's Surrender, and I am looking forward to part 3!!!!

We learn quickly in the Prologue of Kenneth's world shattering loss that drives him to suicide, then the secret Tessa keeps while she lives on the small island owned by her family, with the lighthouse watching over the Bay. Tessa uses this secret to save Kenneth's life. Ten months later the book starts with Kenneth who dreads thinking of that dark day, but having a feeling he was not alone in the waters that day. That he felt a feminine presence with him. He returns to the island he washed up hoping to talk to the woman how found him in hopes she might add some pieces to the day. Tessa is a grumpy, beautiful, young woman who lives by herself and is very anxious to turn Kenneth away before he remembers anything. Yet she finds she is very attracted to him. Kenneth finds himself offering to help Tessa, for free, to maintain the house and lighthouse which are in desperate need of tender loving care. Tessa finds she has no choice but to let him with the ultimatum her sisters give her. As the two are attracted to each other, the other doesn't want to push to far or fast. Then when things look to be going steamy for them, Tessa's ex-fiancée shows up with news of possible mermaid archaeological history. Tessa, Kenneth, and Jake make a journey to be the first to find these artifacts, only to find so much more than expected.

I've never really read anything with Mermaids before and loved the mixture of romance, magic, and the adventurous story of the aquatic archaeological discoveries.

I felt the story was well written. Devyn leaves indications as to explain the quick attraction between Kenneth and Tessa. And gives you the time you need to want these two together and enjoy the characters they are.
