From the Author
The Sisterhood is also a teachingnarrative. Each of the women represents one of nine leadership traits(discipline, self-knowledge, financial stewardship, service, sacrifice, education, vision, innovation, and entrepreneurship). In the Sisterhood, how they address challenges to their survival illustrates what is possible withcollective action and individual excellence. The Sisterhood is a successworkshop written in novel form and in a small category called applied fiction -where the writer begins with a specific curriculum, then creates a strongstand-alone narrative designed to illustrate it.
For me, The Sisterhood startedon a late night drive home from a success workshop I gave during college for agroup of African-American high-school girls. That night, I had the groupstand in a circle and tell each other, one at a time and by name, that theywere smart, beautiful, and could have anything that they wanted and worked for. It was a hard session, with most of the girls unable to accept theendorsement without tears. So many of them simply could not see it, muchless believe it. As I drove home, I thought that there had to be a way toillustrate what I was describing - something more penetrating than quotesfrom self-help books and short workshop sessions. On that drive, Idecided to write the Sisterhood. I conceived of an organization of women, who faced a series of challenges. Addressing those challenges wouldallow me to show versus tell how an individual can be successful. I went homeand jotted the basic plot down which today is more or less the same.
Just when you think you will never read another page-turning, action-filled, suspense story, along comes this intriguing tale, which delves into the workings of a group of intelligent, powerful, and assertive women of African descent, who will stop at nothing to protect their billion dollar multinational ventures from ambiguous foes whose main objective is to destroy the founder’s vision. After the CEO and founder of the Sisterhood, is murdered, and a deadly event occurs in Atlanta, and a fire destroys its headquarters in the Nation’s Capitol, you begin to observe the role that wealth, influence, power and the justice system play in trying to maintain the status quo. The author weaves into her storyline well-defined, versatile, and complex characters. The narrative takes you on a roller coaster ride delving into political upheaval, corporate espionage, cyber terrorism, illegal activities, deception, lies, and betrayal. Well-written plot lines are delivered, exposing secrets, revelations, twists and turns, leaving you with an astonishing ending and a thirst for more of this author’s writings.
The Sisterhood is GENIUS! It is not often you have an opportunity to read a book that is enjoyable AND helpful. Nichol Bradford weaves an interesting and insightful story around the plight of Black America and with great skill connects it to the future of a nation. The novel teaches without be dogmatic or heavy handed and allows the reader to make up his/her own mind. If you like political thrillers, this is your book. If you like romance, this is your book. If you are looking for a way to ease the plight of a historically disenfranchised people, this is your book. The Sisterhood has something for everyone! An amazing trilogy in the making. I can't wait to see what happens in Book 2!
A book that Black Women can be proud to read. Fiction, but the type of fiction that could make you a believer. A believer in the power of Sisterhood, a believer in the power of smart and fierce Black women. This book stretches the mind to imagine the power in each of us to make LARGE scale change in the world. I didn't know where this book was going but I'm so glad that I took the journey. I loved the complexity and the simpleness of the ladies of the Sisterhood. From desiring a better world to putting into motion the physical and mental energy to build that better world, to a very basic desire to have a home with children and a husband. I am my Sister's Keeper! the perfect phrase for this book. When and where will i find the next installment?
Exciting and fast-paced thriller with lots of very cool women (and their guys are always real stand up men full of brawn and brains...and loyal to their women as we all should be). The financial intrigues, fight scenes, strategies, and plot intrigue kept me reading this on my Kindle for the first part of a long flight. The women are all smart, tough, and loyal to one another (no dumb cat fight drama) and to their husbands and families. All while kicking ass and having adventures on the way. Highly recommend this book. Now where is the sequel?
I came of age at a time when the women’s movement was (re-)born. Back then the message was SISTERHOOD IS POWERFUL! Nichol Bradford has written an extraordinary saga that is not just for the socially conscious, or just for women of color – this book goes beyond all stereotypes and the bondage they create. It is a riveting page-turner, action-packed, full of political intrigue, and replete with great characters – three-dimensional women (and men) with real relationships, real-life challenges. The book’s protagonists are a powerful group of exceptional black women in the morass of the corporate world, high finance, drug cartels, and politics at the highest level. It tackles significant social issues including poverty, drug addiction, community development/service, and the inequities facing women (people) of color. All this in a complex web of a thrilling, chilling mystery that includes violence, love, loss, personal growth, spirituality, and a non-stop vision that permeates the book with an empowering, inspiring mission: dare to dream of changing the world. The Sisterhood IS POWERFUL!!
This is a must-read book that I am sharing with my daughters, women friends and colleagues to encourage them to think about their own roles in the right-now, right-here mission of changing our world.
great story,it was from a different perspective that I had not read before.I was totally into the characters, and the mystery of the "sisterhood" as it unfolded.I would recommend this book, especially to women as it gives you a different look at females in general.I also found that the story was well written,I've read a few books on Kindle and wonder if these authors have a spell check or someone to read these books before publishing. I was pleasantly delighted when I found only one error in Ms.Bradford's story.Kudos Nichol Bradford for writing an insightful, intelligent novel.More Please!!!!
I don't think I've ever read a book quite like this. On one hand, you've got an action filled thriller of global politics, motorbikes, drug lords, large explosions and some brutal killings. On the other hand, you've got a futuristic tech startup world and some interesting takes on building a global scale business. Thirdly, the characters in the book all come with their stories - their sufferings, their hardships and their losses which have given them strength and courage but also forced sacrifice. Finally, beyond all it is a powerful social commentary of women of color's position in society, and the barriers that meet them. How the author has managed to put all of this in one narrative - and keep focus and suspension - is beyond me.
As a white girl in the frontier tech world I not only couldn't put the book down, but it also left me incredibly empowered. I can only imagine what this book would do for any woman of color trying to make a dent in the universe.
(Or for any white male tech executive wondering just what it might be like to not be born with all of the privilege)
