In an ancient land steeped in wild magic, three royal siblings fight to keep their kingdom safe from the warriors who threaten its borders—and their bond—in this lyrical debut of spells and song, sisterhood and betrayal.
"ABSOLUTELY STUNNING." —Hannah Whitten, author of For the Wolf
In the kingdom of Dumnonia, there is old magic to be found in the whisper of the wind, the roots of the trees, and the curl of the grass.
King Cador knew this once, but now the land has turned from him, calling instead to his three children. Riva can cure others, but can't seem to heal her own deep scars. Keyne battles to be accepted for who he truly is—the king's son. And Sinne dreams of seeing the world, of finding adventure.
All three fear a life of confinement within the walls of the hold, their people's last bastion of strength against the invading Saxons. However, change comes on the day ash falls from the sky. It brings with it Myrdhin, meddler and magician. And Tristan, a warrior who is not what he seems.
Riva, Keyne and Sinne—three siblings entangled in a web of betrayal, who must fight to forge their own paths. Their story will shape the destiny of Britain.

Riva has the power to heal other people, but is unable to heal the wounds she had sustained from a past fire.
Keyne desires to be accepted as the man he is, despite others regarding him as a woman.
Sinne sings of the old ways, wishing to see the world beyond her home's borders.
When Saxon invaders, a storytelling magician, and a handsome stranger enter the three siblings' lives, trust, betrayal, and murder also follow.
Inspired by the ballad of The Twa Sisters, Sistersong is a dark fantasy novel about family, home, and sacrifice.
-A well-done transgender character that has a process that they go through.
-Three well-drawn female characters.
-A strong world that has its own mythology and a lot of good work in it.
-(Mostly) strong and well-done politics that make sense.
That carried me through the first two thirds of the book easily, but as we got to the last third/quarter of it, things kinda started going off the rails for me. Not so much for Keyne (central transgender character), but more in terms of pacing, certain character choices, how the magic went from somewhat background to painfully foreground with few limits, and how a 'twist' character remained waiting to pull the 'twist' for far too long.
I loved most of the book, and I loved the representation in it, but to see a well-crafted situation and world come stuttering to a sudden stop because of the odd, not-quite-right shift in pacing, as well as magic suddenly doing FAR more than it had been shown to do before against an enemy that seems to quite literally drain it...as well as the things done involving one of the sisters...
There's a lot to unpack here. Some people love it, but the ending - while it didn't ruin it for me - really did bring my appreciation of the book down.

A clever mixture of Anglo-Saxon history and fantasy, Sistersong was inspired by the folk ballad The Twa Sisters, and Holland has spun and woven a tale of richly observed historical details and fantastical elements that I found almost impossible to put down.
I loved this story (which I was lucky enough to read an ARC of last year) and have been recommending it to all and sundry with the unrelenting fervour of a devout convert.
Sistersong is my book of 2020 and with any luck it'll be your book of 2021.
The pacing was great, plenty of tension/action interspersed with moments of contemplation. I also love that this wasn't straight-up historical fiction, there's also a big chunk of fantasy and a bit of romance thrown in as well. That's not to downplay the historical aspect, the depiction of early Dumnonia feels as authentic as they come (I really want to use some of the words!) but this is novel which appeals to more than just historical readers. Beautifully done, I can't wait to read another!
Now where are my shoon?
