Col. Wesley Fox is a Medal of Honor recipient who wrote two widely respected accounts of his wartime experiences in the Marine Corps. His books, Marine Rifleman: Forty-Three Years in the Corps and Courage and Fear: A Primer, are both considered classic war memoirs.

Drawing on over four decades of leadership experience, both during two wars and peacetime, Fox insists that a good leader must focus on building an organization based on the bonds of comradeship. Successful leaders are those who are actively concerned with the health, happiness, and daily lives of those who follow them. He contends that those who have such leaders will be better prepared to cope with any challenge because they are part of a group built on loyalty and trust.

Fox defines the six essential elements of successful leadership as care, personality, knowledge, motivation, commitment, and communication. He presents a chapter on each element, recounts how his views of leadership were forged, and offers impressive examples of leadership displayed by his fellow Marines. While drawn directly from his military experience, Fox contends that these six elements apply to all who want to pursue effective leadership. His book is certain to inspire and motivate both civilians and members of the military.

About the Author

Col. Wesley L. Fox, USMC (Ret.), retired from the Marine Corps in 1993 after forty-three years of distinguished service. He joined the Marines in 1950 and served in the Korean War. Commissioned a lieutenant in 1966, he served as an advisor with the Vietnamese Marines. He later commanded a rifle company and was involved in an action that resulted in his award of the Medal of Honor. His last active duty was as Commanding Officer, Officer Candidate School where he retired in 1993 In addition to the Medal of Honor, he received two awards of the Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star with Combat V, four awards of the Purple Heart, and numerous commendations. From 1993 until his retirement in 2001, Fox served as deputy commandant of cadets at Virginia Tech. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

I loved this book so much that I bought two for boys in my Col Wesley Fox Young Marine unit to inspire them to be good leaders, using the examples provided in the book as guides, and since they are in a namesake unit, it has more meaning than most other leadership books might provide

I read this book as part of a quest to find out more about the Marine Corps Officers Training, but found myself looking at the role,the ability, and what makes a leader tick. Col. Fox takes you on an adventure into your soul if you profess to be a person who wants to lead and not just manage. The principles, ideas, and developmental ideas are straight forward from not only a family perspective but right into the board room. If you do not want to evaluate yourself, be honest, or not willing to answer the hard questions about your leadership then do not open this book. But if your dare to be great, to lead from the heart, then read on and enjoy his wisdom. You may not believe everything in this educational perspective, but you cannot put it down without asking the man in the mirror if he has the ability or the guts to be a leader.
