About the author

Kelly K. James (formerly Kelly James-Enger) “escaped from the law” in 1997. A former attorney, she has been writing for a living, as a full-time freelancer, and more recently, a corporate content writer, for more than 20 years. Currently she writes legal content by day and health/wellness, fitness, psychology, and career-related articles by night. Her freelance work has appeared in more than 65 major online and print publications including Huffington Post, The Girlfriend, NextTribe, Next Avenue, Chicago Health, Vibrant Life, and many other markets.
In 2018, James made the decision to go “in-house” at a small company — and wrote about the transition from freelancer to corporate employee. The Book That (Almost) Got Me Fired: How I (Barely) Survived a Year in Corporate America is Kelly’s first memoir, an entertaining, honest account what to do (and what not) when you make that corporate leap in midlife.
As a ghostwriter, Kelly has penned more than 30 books for clients; she is a novelist and author of writing-related books including:
• Writer for Hire: 101 Secrets to Freelance Success,
• Six-Figure Freelancing: The Writer’s Guide to Making More Money, Second Edition
• Goodbye Byline Hello Big Bucks: Make Money Ghostwriting Books, Articles, Blogs, and More, Second Edition.
Kelly works, writes, plays 8-ball, and golfs (or attempts to) from Downers Grove, Illinois, a Chicago suburb. She shares her home with two teens, a rambunctious rescue pup, and a very spoiled, fat cat.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 17, 2015Utilizing the enterprising ideas in the book are harm-free outlets for me to seek out what I can in order to strengthen my creativity and use the medium of writing as a way to achieve increased personal evolution in all areas of my life. Six-Figure Freelancing (Second Edition) The Writer’s Guide to Making More Money by Kelly-James Enger contains multiple ideas either for people who want to pursue freelance writing on the side or full-time. Metaphorically speaking, I feel as if the author gave me a car to drive towards learning what I can in terms of freelance writing instead of just walking to my destination (there is nothing wrong with walking, I’m just making a point on the information contained for those new to freelance writing), I say this because some of this information may already be known to those who work in fields pertaining to writing, consulting, public relations, being a brand ambassador etc, but extremely helpful for those who are writing novices working outside the fields that are traditionally conducive to freelance writing. Some of the following ideas in her book;
Pg. 63-The Digital Millenium Copyright Act of 1998 (DMCA)-The author quotes a person by the name of Erik Sherman as admitting that he would expect to get paid if the site was commercial, but may also take into account if there aren’t going to get a penny from the site’s owner.
Pages95- 97-a man who has worn multiple hits in the freelance writing sector (ghostwriter, editor, collaborator, book doctor, and entering the world of books (i.e. building a platform, a nonfiction pitch letter etc.).
Page 127; She features a writing query from an example of a writer who is married to an IT expert and has a 2 and a half year old son.
Page 177- Kelly James-Enger uses the case study of Leah Ingram who writes books, articles, does spokesperson projects, balances parenting with being a homemaker, and usually keeps a routine of setting aside 815 am to 345 p.m. for work.
Page 223; A feature on Margaret Littleman who had been writing for magazines and newspapers for several years and who eventually branched out with writing a book called The Dog Lover’s Companion to Chicago. There is also a feature on Robert McGarvey, a successful freelancer for over thirty years, who write a couple of biotech stories for the Midwest Express and went on to write more than $30,000 of work for the Harvard Business Review, New York Times, and Boston Globe.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2017It's a good book to read if you are a writer in any way. Lots of information, easy to read. The information given in the book offers much to think about concerning what someone can possibly do with good writing skills. I was so inspired by the previous edition, I ordered this one. It's a good book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2013I bought this book when the first edition was published a number of years ago. It became a bible of sorts, as Kelly James Enger packed so much practical advice into it. I know I got more and better freelance-writing gigs because of it. Now it's time for a second edition, and the author has come through again, with updated material and sound advice for making it as a well-paid freelancer -- even in the current economy. She doesn't get soft with the reader on anything about this business. It's tough out there. But there is good-paying work to be had, and she will show you how to position yourself to get it. You will be a better business person after reading this book. And that's what it takes to become a Six-Figure Freelancer.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2016I think this book has very valuable information if you're not yet a writer, but you're seriously considering it. She breaks down info about different types of writing, say for magazines versus for corporate clients. There's a lot of talk about the freelance lifestyle and decision-making when it comes to being a writer. She talks about getting assignments and what to expect from editors (lots of time devoted to magazine writing, which I'm not interested in any longer). But for someone who is already a writer, this is really basic. From the title, I assumed it was for writers who are already making a decent living and now want to ramp up their earnings. I found myself skipping huge chunks of the book because it was written to people just getting started. I decided to return it as I found about 20% of it helpful to where I am. I then purchased "The Well-Fed Writer" because it specifically focuses on copywriting and content creating, which actually CAN earn you six figures. I don't know any magazine writers earning that. But if you mix magazine work with other writing, I suppose it's possible.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 22, 2013I've just finished the first edition and now have the second. This is a warmly written and yet honest account of her writing career (briefly) and of the industry. As a new writer this will become one of the references that I will use time and again. She is also quick to recommend other writers being not to proud as well as excellent web sites to address further questions. I have a handful of books that I would recommend but this is one of the first one that I would give out to address things on the commercial end. She and Robert Bly (whom she also recommends) are excellent writers and wonderful to encourage. If you want a start, start here.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2024If you're new to the idea of freelancing, this book has a little bit of everything. It talks about writing a pitch, different kinds of freelance writing, filing taxes, and more. I took a lot of notes while writing.
There are a lot of anecdotes. It's probably half the book! I skipped a lot of them, but I do suggest marking them so you can go back and use them as reference later.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 24, 2020As someone just diving into freelancing, this was a great, well rounded resource. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to start.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013This book has lots of good information. You will not regret purchasing this book. The author's style is engaging and pleasant to read.
