Ms. DiBenedetto's book strikes a great balance between energizing thoughts and simple, one-step-at-a-time habits to build. The author gets very real with her own struggles, past and present. She also provides resources beyond the book on her website. As you build each habit for success, there are free digital workbooks to make the task easier.
This book is a great read. The author makes me feel like I'm having a long conversation with a best friend. The kind where we share all our hopes and fears and help each other to move forward.
Through much therapy, trial and error, she found a pattern of six habits that when practiced regularly changed her self-talk, her way of thinking about herself and those around her, and brought her a strong sense of self-acceptance and love. Through these six habits she found it easier, much more satisfying, and pleasurable to strive for new goals and achieve them.
DiBenedetto's enthusiasm for sharing what she has learned and how to put it into practice jumps off the page. It is easy to believe she really cares about helping her readers find their best selves and bring what they most want to their lives. She gives plenty of examples both hypothetical and from her own life experiences. She's a cheerleader for her readers without ever talking down to them.
One of the best things about this book is that DiBenedetto has included a link to a free workbook that allows the reader to practice these habits. Because of this, The Six Habits is a feel-good book that doesn't simply inspire the reader for the duration of the read, but offers ongoing, practical excersises to keep one engaged and moving forward long after the last page has been read.
The author, Laura DiBenedetto drops a lot of raw truth about herself and really most of us early on especially, and throughout the book. It is easy to tell that she is led by her heart, exposing real, vulnerable truths about her personal life, relationships, business, and inner psyche. The sheer courage it must have taken to write some of the details in this book is staggering. Which is not to say anything in this book is "poor me." Exactly the opposite. It's about becoming the absolutely best, most joyful, courageous, powerful human you can be.
There is an example early on of Mike. "Mike was always wallowing in self-doubt, self-pity, and never got out of his own way. He never took big risks, he never had the cake, he never tried to open that business he dreamed of, he never took vacations, he never liked himself, and always thought everyone else was more deserving." I'm here to tell you, before my spiritual awakening, and especially before The Six Habits, that was me, just add bitter, angry, negative... Well, except for I'm still alive, and I'm changing my ways.
Through this book, this author, brilliantly convinced me there's a better way. Through The Six Habits, I've learned, grown and changed so much. This book is a sheer gold mine of not just self-help, but powerful information that can help in every area of someone's life. It combines so many tried-and-true tactics to help you make the life you want to live.
Sure, we all have baggage. We all have a ton of old junk dragging around with us- negative emotions and old paradigms we wish we didn't have. We choose to lug all this around every day. The author will teach you to choose better. You can choose joy. You can choose happiness. You can choose to heal trauma. You can choose a better outlook on life.
The steps outlined in this book are something to work on and celebrate victories with every day. I used to struggle with being kind to myself. Destructive- (Self talk) Way to go. Freaking blew it again. Never gonna amount to anything. Instructive- Hey, cut me some slack. It was one interview. They obviously have a different agenda. Constructive- I did my best. There are plenty of other opportunities out there. I'm capable of scoring a better job. This is an example of a 1-2-3 knockout. This is just a rough example of one of the many tools available throughout the book. Laura DiBenedetto has gone through the pain, the struggle, the frustration of building a better life. Her powerful honesty and hard work leading up to The Six Habits can help you shorten months and years of toil and discomfort into hours or days of contending with your own thoughts and emotions.
I felt like I had a good grasp of a couple of the habits going in. And I did, sort of... But, I learned, through the habits of Presence, Acceptance, and Gratitude, that there is always more to learn. Through mastering all six habits, a person can lead a better, more fulfilling life. There is so much more out there than just getting by paycheck to paycheck, one Friday night at the bar and Saturday watching sports to the next until one inevitably ends up in a coffin. The author teaches you to reach for your dreams, start that business, go for that house, and ask that person for a date.
I used to be a big Law of Attraction guy. I was firmly convinced it was all about the Benjamins. And after reading The Six Habits, after integrating kindness, self-love, goodness, and gratitude in my life, I've realized it's not about money. It's about creating a flow of powerful energy in my life. Positivity pays. Love and joy are really the end result. Which is not to say The Six Habits can't be used to help attain better relationships, better finances, and be that rich person you thought was unreachable. The Six Habits can get you there, too. The author has painfully gone from rags to riches and she will lead you through the process as long as you are willing to put in some seriously hard work and get out of your own way.
I feel as though my life has changed dramatically through The Six Habits. The lessons learned from this book will stick with the reader for a very long time, possibly forever. It's well worth looking back into and re-reading from time to time to remind oneself of the lessons within. I'm also hoping the rest of my family, especially my two teenagers will read this book because I think it will help them greatly as well. The Six Habits have taught me there is no goal out of reach, nothing is unattainable and I can be so wonderfully happy.
I've truly gained so much from this book and all of the really amazing supplemental tools the author has left links to throughout. I highly recommend taking advantage of the workbooks as much as possible. There is also a tremendously powerful 90 Day Habit Mastery course that is well worth the investment.
Please give the book a good read. Please check out the supplemental material. Please, above all, choose joy. Thank you! And thank you, Laura DiBenedetto, for this wonderful book!
I’m looking forward to the Audible version (not seeing that it’s available yet) because I can see this is one I’d love to listen to for inspiration and reinforcement while striving to reach my life goals.
