Better than I remember as a young punk.
5 Stars
Better than I remember as a young punk.
Vinegar Syndrome did a great job on this 4K! This movie was much better than I remembered it being. I'm generation X so... we were cynical about everything. I was mostly annoyed by the kid in it. But he's sort of designed that way. No offense to the young actor of course. He did a great job in it. When this came out my brain wasn't fully formed so I wasn't able to get some of the references/influences. Originally I balked at the price tag on this, but the transfer is great. It sounds great on way too expensive audiophile headphones... and beautifully enshrines forever (in a digital glass coffin) the majestic presence of the original lineup of the Red Elvises. Reversible cover is a plus.Spaghetti Western meets Kurosawa at a weirdobilly club. And kills him.

Imagine if the world as we know it ended in a nuclear holocaust, and the last pinnacle of civilization was Las Vegas, ruled over by Elvis. Not only the King of Rock and Roll, but the King of civilization as we know it, and the King is dying. Guitar heroes from all over the remains of America set off across the bold new world landscape of America toward Vegas to claim the throne. The most promising is the hero of Six String Samurai. Buddy Holly with a Samurai sword, as proficient with the sword as he is with the guitar, he walks the west like Toshiro Mifune, dispatching cannibals, Russian Soldiers, and Death and his minions, all the while followed by a child sidekick. This is great genre fusion fun, the true spirit of independent film with a lead actor who did his own stunts, wearing clothes he and the director rummaged from a Goodwill Store before being kicked out, you will LOVE this film!

A lot of recent movies in this genre are made by people who've heard about what was cool about movies like "Hell Comes to Frogtown", "Circuitry Man", "Cheri 2000", and the like - but who've obviously never seen enough of them to really "get" what made them good. Six String Samurai was made by someone who DOES "get" it, and other than Turbo Kid, I can't think of another movie in this genre that gets as much right at this one does. Plus, it has appearances by the Red Elvises - your favorite band!

It really captured the sub-culture of the time when it was released, mixing punk, metal, and 50's-era rock and kitsch irony ascetic. There can be a lot of comparisons to the Fallout series of games, as far as it's post-apocalyptic feel, I can't help that this may have been an influence on the modern games.

Jeffrey Falcon was fantastic, not only for performing his own stunts, but he had this physicality of moving during non-action scenes that was almost like Chaplin. The fight choreography was very well executed.

The most glaring, disjointed part would have to the voiceover audio. Sure FX and come cheezy costuming designs are...less than stellar. Listening to "Buddy" and many of the other characters really took me out of the experience. I know, a lot of the B-movie-elements were intentional (like the aspect ratio at the beginning), but that one would have sucked another half-star out of me.

Still, the longer you watch it, the better it gets. Not everyone's cup of tea, but anyone who likes it will probably like it A LOT.

This is one of the best movies I think I've ever seen. Is it Oscar worthy? No. Is the screenplay excellent? No. Is the acting any good? Not really. But this movie is just so fun to watch. It's bizarre. It's ridiculous. It's got some really decent music in it. And the one liners. Oh god the one liners. Our hero doesn't say much but when he does 90% of it is pure gold.

If you have a chance to watch the movie, watch it. Or just buy it here. It's totally worth having in any collection.

I love this movie but I don't know how to review it. We searched forever for it after seeing it on Stars over a decade ago. Post-apocalyptic, samurai, spaghetti western, rockabilly? It is a little campy so if you don't like camp keep walking. It's not a big budget film either, so don't expect crazy special effects.

What a fantastic, awful movie. It's an absurd, low-budget weirdfest with a ninja-sword wielding guitar-loving Buddha Holly trying to become the new King. Amaze your friends when you plug this into the dvd player. It makes Buckaroo Banzai look like friggin' Shakespeare...but that's part of its ridiculous charm. Oh- and THE RED ELVISES! Win.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein post-apokalyptisches Road-Movie in "einer anderen Welt"
Reviewed in Germany on April 13, 2021
Post-apokalyptisch!

Wahnsinns-Soundtrack von "The Red Elvises"!
