A classic song by Tennessee Ernie Ford, and one I have enjoyed for most of my life. His vocals are smooth and powerful, as is the story in the song itself.

On another note, I also recommend a VERY good parody version of the song done by Homer and Jethro which, if you know and like THIS song, is sure to give you a series of good laughs as you listen to it. I believe it is also called "Sixteen Tons." (They even give 'the ol' Pea Picker' a nod at the end)

I love this man's voice. This is a classic. "A poor man's made out of muscle and blood... Muscle and blood, skin and bone... a mind that's weak and a back that's strong... you load sixteen tons, and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter don't you call me 'cuz I can't go. I owe my soul to the company store."

If you want to hear a man who really knew how to sing, get this CD. My husband had the privilege of being the production manager on Mr. Ford's amazing tour in the old Soviet Union back in 1974. Few people know what a well-trained singer "Cousin Ernie" was, but not just anyone gets into the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. The song from which the album title is taken is probably Mr. Ford's most well-known hit. Ford's amazing voice just lifts my spirits and makes me happy.

I HAD THIS MUSIC ON LP AND WORE THE RECORD OUT SO I AM REPLACING IT WITH A DIGITAL COPY WHICH I CAN BACK UP AND SAVE. YOU HAVE TO LIKE THIS TYPE OF MUSIC TO REALLY LIKE IT AND ENJOY IT OTHERWISE YOU WILL HATE IT AND CONSIDER IT A WASTE OF MUSIC AND YOUR MONEY. YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU LIKE BEFORE YOU BUY. I AM REPLACING ALL OF THE 45'S AND LP'S WITH DIGITAL MUSIC.

I gave this number a 5 star rating because I like the story contained in the song, also, Tennessee Ernie's rendition of it. He aims for the low notes and hits them right on. I liked this song the first time I heard it when I was much younger and was delighted to find it again.

They just do not make songs like this any more. My Mom used to sing this song a lot. I think it was one of her favorites and every time I hear this song now, I think about Mom.
