About the Author

The author grew up on a farm in rural north Georgia. When she was five-years-old, Mr. Pirtle gave his daughter a world map, which came folded in a National Geographic Magazine. She hung it on the wall over her bed. The author was not yet in school when her father tossed the television out of the house because he thought it was having too much influence over his children. The author soon realized that if she were reading a book her parents would never bother her to do chores. Thus becoming a ravenous reader she worked her way through many books with stories set around the world in which the characters had wonderful adventures. She lay on her bed with her feet propped up on the headboard, and stared at the map her father had given her, dreaming of visiting all the countries she read about. As a future adventurer, the author wasn’t very happy when her parents moved from the farm to a suburban house in a small Texas town, a town that really didn't have too much a reason to exist. The author kept her eye on the prize of getting out of that town. College seemed to be the best way out, and she set her sights on becoming a cadet at Texas A&M. Her love of National Geographic exposed her to the world of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Though she had never heard of the Merchant Marine, the only way she could be a cadet at the university and study marine sciences was to be a maritime cadet. She wasn't long at the university before she had fallen in love with ships and lost interest in marine sciences. It was at the academy that she met and was mentored by author Stephen Curley. She graduated in 1980 from Texas Maritime Academy as one of the few women to receive, an unlimited Third Officer's license in the US Merchant Marine. She eventually obtained her Unlimited Tonnage Oceans Masters License, by sailing in the Atlantic, the Pacific, Africa, South American, Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Mediterranean, and Alaska trades aboard many sorts of ships. As a patriot the author took five years out of her career to serve her country in the United States Coast Guard. After her tour of duty was completed she returned to the sea as a merchant mariner to finish her seagoing career. Though the Author has been writing since she was a child she began to publish her works in 2015. --This text refers to the paperback edition.
