"Skating in the Vertical by Jan English Leary gets at the most human part of life: the suffering, the challenges, the joys of living life always on the edge between joy and despair. Each of the sixteen short stories gets at something a little bit harder than the last, a little bit deeper, a little bit something more for the characters to push through."--Jaclyn Bauer, Centered on Books
"As a reader, I was drawn in by Leary's clear and deep compassion for her characters, including--or perhaps especially--their flaws and secrets. I also liked that she explored difficult subjects in ways that encourage deeper consideration, rather than easy conclusions. Most of all, I loved how each of these characters simmered palpably, their emotions bubbling just below the surface, waiting for the right moment to burst into the open."--Jennifer Messner, Books, Personally
"Leary is a truly fine storyteller..."--Lori Ostlund, author of The Bigness of the World and After the Parade
