First you read the book.... Ryan's journal of events that are taking place AND THEN you watch a video from Sarah online. These are 3-8 minute videos made by "Sarah" a teenage girl. They are not state of the art videos but they are enough to get a rise out of the kids. It is not too scary just every once in awhile something unexpected jumps out at you. My students could not get enough of this book. They would listen for hours and beg to watch the videos over and over again. They would beg for me to stop reading so we read... A LOT!
This book was so good that soon the 6th grade class next door was wondering what we were up to and wanted in on the action. So... they started reading. Then the third class joined us and then friends at another school. I am telling you... this book is a life saver! We ended up reading the first 4 books of the series in the last 4 days of the school year!!! It was the most we read all year long. The kids went home after school and rewatched the videos with their parents. They were desperate to be the first one to solve the mystery.
This would be the perfect "Halloween" story as well. I saw somewhere that this was good for grades 4-6. I would agree. I think 7th graders may even enjoy it.
Other tan just entertaining, Patrick Carman's main argument is the relationship between parents and their kids. He gives the argument that parents' kids should respect them, but at the same time, parents should not keep their child from being able to make their own decisions. I personally believe that Patrick was very successful in delivering this message, as now I have learned a great lesson in this matter, while still being entertained.
One of the main themes that is discussed is never giving up on what you really want, or persistence. Persistence is a great lesson that should be taught in every young child's mind and should be reviewed multiple times. I think Patrick is very effective in giving this message too because Ryan was very interested in the mystery that he never gave up on it or his relationship with Sarah.
Overall, I think this book is definitely worth the time to read as it can be read in 3 hours or less. With such good organization and a straight forward 1st person point of view novel, you can't go wrong.
I could not relate to any of the characters because I have not had the experience that they have. I have not felt the same thing the characters did.
I like the book of Ghost in the machine because I think it was a interesting book to read. My favorite part of the story was when Sarah Fincher and Ryan McCray were at the dredge and they think there was a ghost on the dredge. If I could change something in the book I would change that old joe bush was not dead and the dredge was still running.I would not change the ending of the story because I think it's a good ending already.
I would recommend the book Skeleton creek because it a good book for people to read. The type of people that would read it is that who horror and mysterious.
