I heard a track from Mulatu Astatke's Sketches of Ethiopia on a collage radio station during my morning drive. The music was so different from what I supposed Ethiopian music would be, and the DJ's brief overview of Astatke's career was so interesting, that I pulled over and bought the CD via Amazon mobile. I'm no music scholar so I have no firm knowledge of what sounds originated where, but the music on Sketches of Ethiopia with it's wonderful mix of musical ingredients that seem to have been bouncing back and forth between Africa and South America is a real delight!

I just received this today and I'm on my second listen. The musicianship is impeccable and all the songs are highly melodic and adventurous.

I could listen to the hypnotic section in Assosa Derache forever; then it brings you out with a single horn note sounding three times, fading into the distance.

This is timeless.

Smooth and magical Mulatu Astatke is a lot of fun to listen to. Melodic but still offbeat and intelligent. Get it.
