"This book set my entire soul ablaze. Michelle Cassandra has an authentic and clear way of breaking down the construct of white supremacy and the work we must do to dismantle it on individual and collective levels. This approach to liberation and transformation through yoga gives me hope and fuel in the fight to create a new experience for myself, my children, my community and the world."
About the Author
I am a yoga teacher, social justice activist, licensed clinical social worker and Dismantling Racism trainer. I approach my life and work from a place of empowerment, embodiment and integration. With a deep understanding of trauma and the impact that it has on the mind, body, spirit and heart, much of my work focuses on helping people better understand how power and privilege operate in their life. I explore how privilege, power and oppression affects the physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energy body. Before yoga, I was a clinical social worker and began my private practice in Chapel Hill, NC in 2001. I specialized in trauma, eating disorders and racial identity work. I have experienced the powerful transformation that comes with embodiment through the practice of yoga. In 2008, I went through yoga teacher training with the goal of infusing different treatment modalities into my practice to better help clients align their minds and bodies. I became a certified yoga teacher in 2009 and went on to complete a 500-hour certification in 2012. In 2015, I began leading my own teacher training: Skill in Action. This training is focused on the intersection of yoga and social justice and it inspires people to consider how they can radicalize their yoga practice to create a just world. I believe in social change and know that it is my responsibility to embody and inspire change.

My brave, stunning friend Michelle's book Skill in Action is, in many ways, about sobriety: sobriety from the oppression that exists within the yoga community and the practice we call yoga. It's a book that allows us to see clearly the matrix of white supremacy in spaces that are elevated as spiritual classrooms. It's an invitation to explore our personal ancestry and how we often appropriate the ancestry of others. To be brutally honest about the difference between the intention and the impact of our actions. To learn how to practice radical inclusivity, both on and off the mat. And, it's a book about how to do all of this with the support of the breath; the support of the practice of yoga.
In short, it's a book that every spiritual-minded individual in recovery from white supremacy needs to read as an important step on the path of becoming racially sober. Thank you, Michelle, for writing this and for sharing your beautiful, courageous heart with the world. I'm deeply grateful, and I know that everyone else who reads this book will be grateful as well.
