"Insights and practical suggestions to college educators for whom teaching students is a major part of their professional responsibility. . . . [Brookfield] will become to the field of education what Peter Drucker has become to management: a scholar who educates and influences practitioners in the field through incisive and challenging writing."--Canadian Journal of University Continuing Education

"Readable, innovative, and perceptive. . . . The final chapters on the political realities and phenomenological truths of college teaching alone are worth the price of the book, especially for prospective, new, or veteran college, adult, or continuing education teachers."--Choice

"In an educational world that seems to be dominated by prescriptive exhortations. . .this book provides a refreshing step back from those preoccupations to look at the human relations that always are at play between teacher and student and between student and student."--TESL Canada Journal

Brookfield writes in a personal tone, sharing what he has learned in 20 years of teaching adults. He suggests that college students are adults, and should be taught as such. This is the sort of book you like to read when you've had a bad day and think no one else feels like this. Brookfield makes it okay to talk about things like feelings, discouragement, inferiority, degree of student involvement, etc. For beginning students or veterans alike, this book can easily become a teacher's friend--a source of comfort, ideas, and challenges which can help you survive and grow, both personally and professionally.

Brookfield is a key expert in pedagogy and andragogy(adult learning). He writes clearly with a non-academic/jargon style. A "must" for teachers from a humble scholar and teacher; no hubris here. Should be required reading for teachers at all levels for discussion and comment. This edition is well updated. A good vehicle for faculty development.

This book provides practical, yet not presciptive, advice about how to handle many aspects of teaching adults, especially in the community college/4-year college setting. When reading the book, you are privy to the valuable insights of a veterean educator, as if present to an intimate and reflective conversation about what it is like to teach this population. Again, The Skillful Teacher: On Technique, Trust, and Responsiveness in the Classroom is not a how-to book, but rather one that successfully provides the moorings to becoming a great teacher.

The Skillful Teacher is a wide-ranging book written by a seasoned educator that details valuable advice to both new and experienced teachers. Brookfield draws upon years of experience and trial-and-error to give both very personal and practical advice on how to excel in not only teaching, but also in maximizing the environment for learning and identifying the roadblocks that serve to deter proper education. Overall, he repeatedly emphasizes that a “one-size-fits-all” approach is not feasible, and part of the process of growing as an educator is marching through the often-unpredictable rough patches that no one has established a solution for. A majority of this book’s value comes from its practical applicability toward almost any field where one person instructs others.

The book does not provide exact prescriptions on how to accomplish certain tasks but does detail broad strategies that can be applied in multiple contexts and levels. This does not take away from the book’s value but instead increases it reach and is consistent with its philosophy that no uniform formula is appropriate in all scenarios.

After reading this book, I absolutely have a better understanding of how to teach, and have an even greater knowledge of how others mature in different learning environments. I have no background in education and found this book very relatable and easy to read. I used this book as part of a graduate level course.

Brookfield's book ought to be required reading for anyone teaching at college level or beyond. His insights on dealing with the unexpected in a classroom (which he argues is the teachers' normal experience) were both reassuring to an experienced graduate-level instructor and valuable in that they provided useable techniques for achieving educational goals. Strongly recommended as a guide, a handbook, and a source of solace on those days when nothing seems to be going as anticipated.

This book is filled with practical advice written in a very easy to understand style. While reading it, I felt like I was getting sound, friendly advice from a mentor rather than being preached to. I especially liked how the author extensively addresses the emotional issues and potential tensions that can arise in a classroom of adult learners and how you can overcome these barriers to learning. Teaching is as much about interpersonal interaction as it is about the imparting of knowledge and Brookfield gives substantial amounts of text to addressing the interpersonal aspects of teaching in a very down to earth and easily applicable way.

This book is a valuable reference for those who are teaching adult learners, especially in a community college situation where you are faced with students from a wide variety of education and socioeconomic backgrounds with varied goals and expectations.

I enjoyed the first half of the book immensely, but it got a little tedious towards the end and became less and less relevant for a secondary school teacher.
